Some things look better with age and Ashvek Vintage World (AVW) - Goa’s first and only vintage car

Some things look better with age and Ashvek Vintage World (AVW) - Goa’s first and only vintage car museum- bears testimony to that.

Setup in July 2004, AVW completes four years of successful operations today. The brainchild of Mr. Pradeep V. Naik, it was started to spread awareness about vintage cars amongst the youth. “AVW will serve as education. There is an urgent need to preserve motoring treasures for posterity”, he says. He burns with the passion of inculcating a love and respect for these old beauties which he feels has withered away due to neglect.

Ashvek Vintage World takes up restoration and preservation of vintage cars, and has restored classics such as a 1931Peugeot, a 1948Chevrolet Fleet Master, a rare two-engine Vandall tempo, a 1961Datsun Fairlady, Morris 8 and 1939Mercedes 170 which are currently on display. Some of the cars restored here are in excellent working condition and can be hired out for weddings, movie shoots or simply for joy rides. The money sourced from this is reinvested in maintaining new and existing cars. AVW is also a pioneer in organizing vintage car rallies in Goa with four already under its belt which include the Volkswagen Rally and the IFFI Rally.

They also undertake restoration of vintage cars belonging to other owners. A 1928 Ford belonging to Mr. Rauraje Deshprabhu of Pernem, as well as an attractive Austin belonging to Jaywant Chowgule are just some of the vehicles that have been restored here.

Usually held with much pomp and grandeur, there has been no celebrations to mark its fourth anniversary as Pradeep is currently in USA with Mr. Emerico Gracias, a vintage car collector from Goa, touring car museums. The Hershey Museum and the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit are some of the stops on the tour.

AVW also serves as a great location for parties and get-togethers with a well equipped hall on the first floor.

Loligoth Cuff

[caption id="attachment_16" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Loligoth Cuff"][/caption]

I know, I know. Your probably thinking...ANOTHER hybrid. Well, yes. It is. At least I think so. The fact is, I've been making this kind of jewelry for a long time. Years really. I actually started out using things I found, really old bits and bobs and whatchamacallits. I used gears and watch parts and clock hands. Nutty stuff...so I thought.

I was actually having trouble categorizing my work. I therefore did not know how or where to sell it. Etsy had just been born, so no one was hip to that, including me. I eventually cleaned up the look, refined the style, and stuck to the "new" old stock things that I ran across, and left the old watch parts aside. Then I'd restore what I had to almost new (always keeping some of the patina). From that I created a jewelry line that I could sell to the die hard vintage fans and eco-friendly shoppers. But I still didn't know what SteamPunk was, or that anything like it even existed.

Then one day it hit me. I was researching Etsy before putting up my shop, and I saw something that just about made me faint! There was SOMEBODY doing the same thing I did before with the watch parts, and she was doing great! WTF, I said. Then I saw a few more people with the same style, and they all had Steampunk in their tabs. How could this be? I thought.

I realized that I have been so far into (or out of) it that I didn't know the scoop. That stuff is hot. The old gears and watch parts AND the more stylish vintage costumey stuff. So I combined the two, and what do I have? Steam Punk Lolita Jewelry. Wow. Who knew.

[caption id="attachment_18" align="alignright" width="300" caption="VictoriaGoth Cuff"][/caption]

So I did some more research. I saw a trend. Things I was thinking up years ago, like spats and arm warmers that look like spats...well they are hot now. Especially with EGL's. (Elegant Gothic Lolita)

So you see, these hybridization things just happen, usually quite organically. I have opened that shop at Etsy. It looks great! You can check it out here.

Although I ended up chucking all the gears and clock hands, I have been inspired to resurrect that original look I had before, and take it to another level. I see myself kind of like Datamancer, only with jewelry instead of computers.

By the way, go see that guy's stuff. I get warm just thinking about it. I think I will review him further very soon. Giving props to my fellow steam tinkerer...yeah.

Well, I thought it might be a good idea to document the process of becoming a newbie RVer. The thought of getting an RV hit me hard this summer. After the good smack, it left a permanent scar that won't disappear.

A bit about my life, first. I am recently married to my partner of nine years. We run a very demanding business. A business that can not function, without us. So we are stuck to mini-weekend vacations through-out the year, and the one week, maybe two if we are lucky week long vacation at Christmas. This leaves us mostly stuck on a local level for travel, except during our Christmas Vacation, where we can venture farther away from home.

Our home, is in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. A suburb located in Metro Vancouver. With Less than 4 hours driving, we can easily escape the city. Perfect for us to take our RV, or what I like to call it, "our second home" where-ever we feel like for a weekend of peace, quiet, and relaxation.

We can never make a decision, until it comes to the last moment. We talk and talk about exactly what we want, but when it comes down to it, we might find something so completely different, that we must have it.

We talked about a C-Class motor-home. This makes me nervous, for a few reasons. High cost of fuel, it has an engine, and with engines, come mechanical "errors," and once you pull up to a campsite, you are basically stuck there without a secondary vehicle to take you to the "yummy gourmet" restaurant you saw in the next town you just drove through on your way to the site. The idea of getting dressed up, and taking your motor-home to a fancy part of the town/city, doesn't really appeal to me very much.

So I mentioned a travel trailer (TT). My new husband start to squirm in his chair. I started going on about how cost effective a TT would be as they are much cheaper than a C-Class, we can tow it with a secondary vehicle, and the secondary vehicle would be much better on fuel than a C-Class. He told me, it had to be small, 18ft, cause he didn't like the idea of pulling something. Ok, deal.

Next thing, New or Used? I liked the idea of a used one, as again, it's cheap compared to buying a new one. But the big reason is, I can renovate it, put our own style into it, and still come out, much cheaper, than buying a brand new one. Yes, I know, watch for leaks, the stove or oven probably wont work in an older one, etc, but that can all be replaced and fixed. Once I mentioned this to the husband, he went for it, with the low cost, being the deal breaker.

So we are in the search for the perfect "vintage" Travel Trailer. Preferably something late 70's or early 80's. Must have a dinette, and a bathroom. And must have an oven, as a microwave can be difficult to run on solar-panels, when boon docking.

And thus the blog. Whatever I come across something, I will post it here. I will also post our progress in our search for the perfect "second home."

Blind thrifting - that's the kind of ignorant thrifting I did a a few years back at my church's charity shop. Well not to say that I'm a pro at it... but having read more blogs and the ways of the wise I think I am better equipped as I plough through the rows and racks of clothes.

That said, my blindness/ignorance landed me a few goodies that I have only recently discovered to be real gems!

Mummy: MINE!
Top: Topshop
Belt: Alaia
Jeans: Levi's
Heels: From Hong Kong

Alaia! I didn't know who or what the hell Alaia was, but I was pretty sure the person who bought the belt must have been very ripped off because it cost S$790, and it came from this place called Glamourette... which kinda sounded dodgy and cheapy to me a few years ago hahaha.

Well I didn't realise it was Alaia until my mum dug out the belt to wear today in the outfit (minus the heels cos she wore mary janes - she's a florist).

And Glamourette is (or was) not the least bit dodgy/cheapy. Glamourette was a multi label boutique that used to be housed in the now-defunct Promenade, stocking designers such as Emanuel Ungaro and Thierry Mugler (according to yesterday's copy of Urban).

OH OH OH I GOT IT FOR S$1!

Quite a gem it is. I love that it's in suede (CAN YOU RESIST TOUCHING SUEDEEEE?? ((molests belt)) hahaha) and it has these cute woven ribbons peeking out randomly.

BUT. I cannot fit it. My monster of a waist is 2 inches shy of the first belt hole ):

Ever since my mum came home from Chicago she's been copping our stuff and dressing exceptionally well (: And LC from Fops and Dandies is going to Chicago too! I'm one of the lurkers who never surfaced. I think I ought to, especially since she is gonna leave blogging behind.

Several weeks back I bought a bunch of fabric from a lovely woman who was de-stashing a bit. I had my eye on a bunch of reds for a quilt (which is almost done and you will see soon!). Anyhow, I wanted to wash my new fabrics before I used them and, well, something faded and made nice purple splotches on some of the other fabrics. Well, I didn't want anything bleeding on the final quilt, so what to do? A bleed test, of course! And what's a little scientific experiment without documentation of the results?

I unfortunately did not get a photo of the two fabrics that were the worst offenders. But you can see a couple *somewhat* problem children in this photo.

Do you see them?

Front row, second from the left. And the one in the little square dish. Also the front row, far right was a tiny bit pink.

I tested a few more while I was at it. All these were good! Excellent!

Tip: Use white containers! It really makes the color obvious. I tried initially with some small silicone containers in bright colors (I use them for individual chocolate lava cakes) and, well....impossible to tell if the water had changed colors.

Now I can rest assured that the fabrics in my quilt won't bleed when I wash it (hopefully!).

P.S. Most of the dishes in the back two rows of the top photo are vintage Fire King custard cups. What a great use for them!

* tu vai voltar a cantar logo, logo?

Like to see my new vintage glass with the reflect-o-matic sterling silver treatment...Glows....

Trying to upload photos and descriptions for a few new pieces....

Anyway, I may be blogging more in the next few days... I have been stuck in bed for the most part all week. While it sucks that baldguy lost his job and our unemployment rate here is pretty miserable, it was good timing as he is keeping after boyo and fetching me provisions.

Something is very wrong in my back and I am trying to figure it out...
I had a big bad emergency spine surgery 12 years ago and the pain is near there.... I fear another infection or that perhaps the vertebrae are finally squashing some nerve... Anyway. It really freaking hurts.

But, I can stand still and type and I feel ok, for the most part....And I'm not a wuss. I have had pain every day for 12 years. But dull, achy pain is one thing, feeling like someone is chiseling into your spine and ribs (on just one side, thankfully) is another.

So here I am...

Had an hour and 15 minute long MRI this morning but won't know anything until they decide to call me. Medicine is so lax down here it's ridiculous, so I'm not holding my breath for an answer. When I had the parathyroid tumor two years ago the docs suggested we use a "wait and see" approach. I wound up doing a boat load of research and demanded the scan to see what was going on and then I found my own surgeon to schedule the surgery(Dr. Norman's Parathyroid Clinic in Tampa- amazing surgeon...). Wait and see. Those things don't just disappear- they are there and they cause problems until they are removed or you die from the freaking side effects (heart issues, digestive issues, liver issues...yikes!)... So I'm none too confident about my medical care here...If whatever this weird back thing is needs anything more invasive than an alcohol swab I'm heading north for a spell. If this is another bone infection, I'm worried. Last time they didn't find it until I was in ICU, on all sorts of apparatus, in a coma. No more comas for me, thank you very much. One was more than enough! I have to be here for my little guy.

Anyway. Here I am....Trying to stay as still as possible while my brain wants to run around doing a happy dance because the new issue of BUST magazine is coming out next week and woohoo! one of my pieces is in the Etsy co-op ad. Yay! So buy a copy and check out all of the shops.

Ok. Going to grab some tea and go be as still as a rock in front of the TV.

Sorry for the kvetching. I'm in a good mood really I am!

Hugs, albeit very gently frame-y ones, all around...
