So guess what, I finally added referral URLs! That means now whenever someone refers another then they get referral credits for each and every page they surf.
The referral credit is equal to 1/3 of the normal credits. Since the surfing credits are 0.6 that means the referral credits are 0.2! Which is more than most auto surfs!

I hope you enjoy this latest update, because I know it took some thought and work to get it implemented.

The navigation toolbar is one of the key features of your web browsing experience, with the address

The navigation toolbar is one of the key features of your web browsing experience, with the address bar being fundamental to the effective deployment of search. On a daily basis we enter information into this medium and wait expectantly for a vibrant and dynamic return for our efforts - but what do all the letters, numbers and symbols actually mean?

URL - Uniform Resource Locator

The global address of documents and other resources on the world wide web

Effectively the 'web addess' found in the navigation toolbar (top of the browser)

It is composed of the 'protocol identifier', the 'resource name', 'domain name suffix'

Protocol Identifier (http://HealthEngine.com.au/quintura.html)

http://

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol - defines how messages are formatted and transmitted

https://

Secure website protocol requiring password identification for the transmission of secure documents vis the internet e.g. credit card payments

SSL (secure sockets layer) is the cryptographic layer used to to secure websites

Resouce Name (http://HealthEngine.com.au/quintura.html)

IP address - e.g. 165.110.118.57

Basically a 32-bit numeric address for a computer, server or device

Written as four numbers separated by (.)

Each number can be zero to 255

However these numbers are running out !! More specific information

Domain name

Name used to represent one or more IP adresses

Used in a web address to denote web pages

Domain name suffix (http://HealthEngine.com.au/quintura.html)

Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain it belongs to e.g.

.gov - Government agencies

.edu - Educational institutions

.org - Organizations (nonprofit)

.com - Commercial organisations

The suffix often denotes the domain country of origin/server hosting e.g. (Australia as .com.au)

Check out webopedia for a full list of countries and their domain extensions

Alternatively Firefox flag extension is a neat way to check the country of the websites server

Web Page (http://HealthEngine.com.au/quintura.html)

Name of the actual web page, within the website - often denoted by the type of language used to write the page

Hyper text Markup Language (html) - defines the strucutre and layout of the web document

How do I shorten a URL to make it easier to remember and easier to share?

There are lots of options to shorten a web adress (URL). These are useful to create short and easy to remember URL's to email, share and post

Short.to

Simple and effective - does exactly what it says on the tin. Remember to drag the 'bookmarklet' to your toolbar to be most effective

Other domain URL shortening sites include tinyurl.com and abe5.com

Beware the url re-direction sites e.g. tiny.cc, these create traffic to their own hosting domain instead of directly to your specificed URL and also emphasise the full length of the URL you are shortening. Have moved away from such sites as there are so many better options which direct traffic straight to your chosen destination URL

Problema:

Problema:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^dominio1.com(.*)      [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.dominio1.com(.*)  [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^outrodominio.com(.*)  [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^paraquetantodominio.com(.*)
RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://www.dominioprincipal.com/$1   [L,R=301]

Notas:

[sourcecode language="php"]
$context = sfContext::getInstance();
$routing = $context->getRouting();
$route = $routing->findRoute("/produtos");
[/sourcecode]

[sourcecode language="php"]
Array
(
[name] => default_index
[route] => /:module
[parameters] => Array
(
[action] => index
[module] => produtos

According to a recent survey by Gensler, the prominent corporate architecture firm, half of all employees say they would work an extra hour per day if they had a better workplace. So why do so many companies maintain dark, cramped, ugly, or poorly designed offices?

Studies show that a well-designed office is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to retain workers and make them more productive. General Electric, Microsoft, and major West Coast insurer Group Health are just a handful of major organizations reaping the bottom-line benefits of smart, worker-oriented designs.

Wordpress allows me to track what searches on Google et al are landing people on my web page here. Many of the hits are searching 'early church, Mclaren, Claiborne, emergent, non-violence, war, iraq, bible verses' and the like, but I sit in astonishment almost every single day when I see that at least one (and sometimes many more) people type in "taddelay.wordpress.com" into a search engine to reach me.

Why not just type that into the URL bar at the top of the screen? Have we become so Google-dependent that we can only look things up, even if we know the address, with BFF Google's aid?

I appreciate the traffic, but this phenomenon does leave me a bit baffled.

Problem

Those long URL's (Uniform Resource Locater) can be annoying. Many of us have had the experience of finding a really great Web page that we want to share with others but the URL is soooo long that it doesn't copy and paste on one line and creates a broken link. The extra work it requires to get the link to work can be annoying.

Solution

TinyURL.com provides an elegant solution. Copy the URL, paste it into TinyURL and and a tiny URL magically appears.

Example:

This long URL
http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Portland&1s=OR&1a=80
1+SW+10th+Ave&1z=97205&1pn=Central+Library&2c=Po
rtland&2s=OR&2a=4040+N.E.+Tillamook+Street&2z=97
212&2pn=hollywood+library&r=s

becomes this short URL

a) Är den indexerad?

So I was reminded today of the telephone wars of my youth…you know, who had the best/most memo

So I was reminded today of the telephone wars of my youth...you know, who had the best/most memorable phone number? Remember those days? Good, because I barely do. I was kinda young, and I grew up with a cell phone so the memorizing of phone numbers was barely a part of my childhood. However, I do remember enough to write a bit about it, so calm down. Sheesh.

I was reminded of this phenom today when I was driving behind a truck that had the following phone number plastered all over the back "1 800 RED - R - ARC." I have no clue what they were advertising, and I tried googling it, but came up empty handed. Dare I actually call the number?! Naa, that's besides my point.

My point is that the phone number war reminds me of the present day war for good URLs. People want memorable, simple, short, catchy, unique domains....kinda like the good phone numbers! I frequent this blog regularly, and my guess is that if blogging were around in the early to mid 90's, I imagine there would have been a similar blog displaying good and bad telephone numbers. I always loved the 1800 numbers that were like 1800-BEST-MAGAZINE-EVER so just they would say what they wanted it to say, even though the first 7 letters only counted - those always made me chuckle, even at the ripe old age of 9.

So that's just the overall thought, but my real point here is that I just have to wonder why more companies aren't using this new little thing called the internet. Yeah, they may have catchy commercials where their number is said in the song, blah blah blah..but the truth is, you just have to get over your catchy phone number. The phone number is so totally 10 years ago, it's all about the domain now. DUH! RAD! TALK TO THE HAND! etc.

Want proof? I know of a certain commercial on many stations out here in Arizona that features a song with the phone number in it. While researching a bit for this entry, I realized that I have NO CLUE what the name of their business is. I can recite their phone number, but what does that even tell me?! Am I really going to call the number stuck in my head just to ask? Maybe...but does that result in sales? Probably not.

Now, I'm not saying phone number promotion should be 'hung up on' (oh man, I'm goooooooood), but I would suggest incorporating BOTH the number as well as the domain. I know your target clientele may still use the phone entirely, but SOMEONE has to be able to create a catchy little jingle that also states the URL! Right? I guess if your phone number is THAT great, you can always do what 1800flowers.com did...

URL Rewriting can be a pain at times. The truth is, it is a pain! There are tons of ways of doing it, but it gets very confusing, very fast trying to figure out which is best. As a result you try fixing something and it gets blown into pieces.

To help everyone once and for all I’ve developed a very EASY to understand guide to URL rewriting. I’m not going to go in depth on the technical information since unless you have an intermediate to advance understanding of .Net, you’ll just be lost anyway, or rereading this 20 times until you get it.

To begin URL Rewriting I’m going to use the easiest method known:

Context.RewritePath(“~/pies/index.aspx?q=123”, rebaseClientPath:="false")

Now this code must be placed within global.asax which should look like:

Sub Application_BeginRequest()

     Context.RewritePath(“~/pies/index.aspx?q=123”, rebaseClientPath:="false")

End Sub

Application_beginRequest() is a sub procedure used for beginning the request from the browser into .Net to play with. I’m not going into detail on this, but there are a lot of great articles out there about global.asax and I suggest you read it later on…

That’s it! That’s the only code you need! But wait! It can’t be that simple? Well… you’re right, because while that may rewrite the URL, it cause a lot of other problems. Let me begin to explain what this code does.

First off Context.RewritePath simply redirects the current URL to a different sever side path. So if you have the URL: http://site/pies/apple-pie/123.aspx, the server will think that URL is actually the above rewritten URL. Thus everything is fine! One problems, what about if you use APP_Themes and other functions?! This can be a problem since now my CSS code is all gone!

This is a simple problem to fix, which is what rebaseClientPath:=”false” does RebaseClientPath simply prevents .Net from being like, well typically app_themes is: ../../app_themes, but you rewrote the URL so let’s make the path to ../app_themes.

Obviously if you think about it, this won’t work, because our browser thinks we are at /pies/apple-pie/123.asp and not /pies/index.asp?q=123

To prevent .Net from trying to “fix this” we simply disable it by setting RebaseClientPath to false. Works like a charm!

Now then there is one other issue we need to fix, that pesky and extremely annoying form tag! I can’t stand how .Net tries to use the server side path instead of the client side path! Not only does it allow users to see the full URL on post back, such as for /pie/ turning into /pie/index.aspx but it also prevents the code from working on a URL rewrite! So now we have to go in and fix this…

How? This is where it gets a bit tricky! Its call custom server controls. If you don’t know what they are, you should really look into them if you’re serious about .Net. To get the general idea custom server controls allow you to create your own tags, such as <pie:Eat runat=”server” />

I will not dare begin to try explaining how in depth custom controls can get. So I’m going to instead give you a reference if you need to know how they work: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms972970.aspx

I won’t go any further in detail then quickly pasting some code and showing you how it works.

Ok now that you have that code, go ahead and save it and let me explain it briefly. What this code does is pretty simple in nature. You create a namespace to hold your custom controls. That namespace is the <pie: part of the tag. Generally just a holder. After that each tagname after that is a class such as <pie:”FORM” the form part is your class. Make sense? Moving on either way, lol.

After you have the class setup we go ahead and just import the current form class information:

    Inherits System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlForm

That line is very important! That makes the class essentially a form tag! Now we just gota go in and “hack” up .net to force the form tag to use the action we want.

We need to override the RenderAttributes routine to do this. All this does is instead of adding the default attributes we go in and play around and fix it up. In this case we change the default form action to our new one that we want, “/pie/apple-pie/123.aspx”

All that’s left is to register the tag prefix and switch the current <form runat=”server”> with <pie:form runat=”server”>

Who owns trinaallen.com?

This morning, I received this e-mail:
Dear owner of trinaallen.com,
I noticeded that your domain

This morning, I received this e-mail:

Dear owner of trinaallen.com,

I noticeded that your domain "trinaallen.com" expires in a few weeks, which means that it is going to be publicly available soon. I'd like to buy this domain name before it expires.

I assume that you are not interested in keeping it for yourself.

I can buy this domain for $60 plus any renewal related expenses. What do you think?

Stan Nonin,
stan_nonin@blueridgehosting.com

I'm not sure how many hits this spam will actually get with the misspelling of the second word. But, since this is the second time someone has sent me a spam about my domain name, see previous post., it got me thinking. Do I own my domain name? I should know that since I have a Web site. Feeling a little embarrassed, I decided to do some reading about domain names. This is what I learned.

A domain name is part of an Internet address. For example, google.com, howstuffworks.com, epa.gov, army.mil, stanford.edu.

A URL, or Uniform Resource Locator, is an Internet address that contains the domain name. It must include information to the left of the domain name, identifying the correct Internet protocol. Listed are some common protocol identifiers: http://, ftp://, and mail:.

For example, the domain name for my web site is: trinaallen.com. The URL for my web site is: http://www.trinaallen.com

How Stuff Works has several articles that I found helpful:

Because all of the names in a given domain need to be unique, there has to be a single entity that controls the list and makes sure no duplicates arise. For example, the COM domain cannot contain any duplicate names, and a company called Network Solutions is in charge of maintaining this list. When you register a domain name, it goes through one of several dozen registrars who work with Network Solutions to add names to the list. Network Solutions, in turn, keeps a central database known as the whois database that contains information about the owner and name servers for each domain.

So, after doing a little research, I learned that I own the domain name trinaallen.com. My domain name registrar is Yahoo!'s domain registration partner, Melbourne IT. They are responsible for maintaining my domain registration records and managing my domain renewals.

I also learned that anyone can go find information about any domain currently in existence at either of these two sites: http://www.betterwhois.com or http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp. Anyone with an internet connection has access to the registrar’s administrative, technical, and billing contact information.

So, I made my domain information private in the hopes that spammers will have a harder time finding me. Now the contact information for Melbourne IT is listed in place of my contact information in the public WHOIS database.

I was also rather taken aback discover that anyone with an Internet connection can see who links to my site, my traffic, and what the site used to look like as far back as 2004. All the articles and stories that I thought I’d deleted can be viewed there. How scary and embarrassing. It is a lesson that you can't undo what you post on the Internet.

SEO Tip: Search Engine Friendly URIs

A large amount of content or database driven sites neglect to optimize their URIs for search engines

A large amount of content or database driven sites neglect to optimize their URIs for search engines. Even well known sites that have been around for years. Adding a few keywords to the URI/URL is common SEO knowledge. However, lots of developers only do this in blogs and fail to do it in other applications.

Referencing the a server side resource by adding it's id to the URI(e.g. ?user_id=4347) is a safe and simple method. The only problem is that you don't get the full benefit of search engines. The search engine will look at your URI and just see it as a bunch of gibberish. A number(id=873) means absolutely nothing the crawler and will be ignored.

Yeah I know what your saying...it doesn't really help a whole lot. The truth is that it DOES HELP! So little effort is involved that it's worth a try.

This is what I do for my content based sites:

Instead of a URI like this(Dirty URI): www.yoursite.com/p/98789
I would put some SE readable keywords in there(Nice URI): www.yoursite.com/people/clintonskakun

Overall it's just better looking and it gives the search engine a reason to rank you higher!

It includes Category support. Perhaps a future version will include Tag support?

Once you've installed the widget you need your XML-RPC url... thanks to another blogger I seem to have gotten this working pretty quickly.
