I wanted to play "grown up". So I went near the bedroom door, closed it by jumping a lot of times and bolting it on the top. Now I was shut in a locked room, without knowing how to unlock it. I had forgotten to learn how to unlock a bolt! I cried. With instructions from the other side of the door on how to unlock it I made it out after about an hour of drama!

Monsoon in Calcutta is heavy. All streets overflow, to waist deep depth for a 10 year old. Schools declare holiday midday. And I trudged through the flood back home. One such day all books, my bag, me got wet. On coming home I realised I had lost my plastic water bottle to the floods! I cried. Mom was relieved that I was back home safe though! P.s: They open the manholes sometimes!

14 years old in Tuticorin. Wanting to play "grown up" (didn't learn my lesson last time!). I wanted to kick start my dad's scooter. So I tiptoed down to the place where it was parked and kicked the starter hard (this was around 2 a.m in the night mind you!). I messed up big time and gave full throttle( I didn't know bout that at that time. All I knew was dad twisted that black handle when starting, but I twisted it very hard!). And there was this deafening roar in the still of the night! Next day I was embarrassed to see all people on my street whom I had woken up and who had come running towards my home in the middle of the night!

Four years later in Coimbatore, I as riding my bicycle on a busy highway. A fellow in front of me braked hard and sudden. I was going full speed. My tyre hit his tyre as he sped on. I lost balance. My cycle fell onto the road, almost near the middle. I fell to the left. As my head hit the ground, a speeding lorry sped over my cycles tyres. I realised in shock that my head could have been there!I had a surgery on my ring finger (ha ha) which was fractured and a few scars which still show. But the shock still remains though fading away slowly!

Finally, twenty two years after being born, on this day, I am officially an adult!

Macaroons were originally first tried out in Italy by monks. Once you eat it, you fall in love with it and this is what happened to the French who happened to be passing by an Italian monastery. And like an epidemic, this craze for macaroons spread to France & thence on to the British Isles.

We have to thank the French for bringing this to India. They had set up their base in Pondicherry & a few Frenchmen who decided to sail on a Sunday to the south of Tamil Nadu, probably disembarked at the Port town of Tuticorin for a bite & deposited a few of those Macaroons with a local. (I'm just imagining this is what brought the macaroon to Tuticorin. Sounds probable doesn't it? )

But since then, there has been no looking back. Tuticorin is now ,undeniably the Macaroon capital of India. Admitted, there are a few competitors in Mangalore, but the Tuticorin Macaroon is in a league of its own.

Now, as usual, for the uninitiated, what on earth is a Macaroon? A Macaroon is a cookie. Its as simple as that. But its USP is that it melts in the mouth. The typical macaroon is made with egg white, powdered sugar & flavoured with cashew nuts and is the product of some time in the oven. Usually shaped in the form of a cone, there is no hard & fast rule that it ought to be like this.

Some enterprising chaps have come out with variations, including coconut flavoured & lemon flavoured ones. But there is none, that can beat the original Cashew Macaroon for taste.

A bite of the macaroon leaves you with a pleasant sensation of crackling on the tongue while it melts & it leaves the pleasant aftertaste of cashewnuts.

Macaroons are best taken as dessert preferably after lunch. But that doesn't mean they taste bad on a liesurely sunday morning when you are reading your newspaper.

So, now that you've read this, your duty would be nothing less than giving it a try. Versions of the macaroon are available in most places in India, but if you have a colleague or a friend who hails from Tuticorin, that would be your best bet.

So, go ahead, fall in love with Macaroons.

I was thinking of my life at Tuticorin today. The two years I stayed there had long - lasting effects, not to mention the physical ones (the ballooning up of me!).

Take for instance the events at Sakthi Vinayagar Hindu Vidyalaya (!!) No no, I am not talking about my next street temple where hurried priests, shout mantras at the idols or where every Saturday you get puli saadam (tamarind rice). That was the school I studied. The bank quarters where we were supposed to say was in Chidambara Nagar which had a Chidambara Vinayagar Temple. And the school was in the same street. Hence THAT name for a school. So by default I was into that school, we didn't need to go looking for a school.

 You can conjure up images of an English Catholic Convent with an in - house church, only that you drastically imagine all nuns and fathers as hindus and the church as a temple right outside the entrance. You got the picture right? A Hindu Convent if I may say so!

 Assuming you are an intelligent reader, guess what the uniform was like? Yes come on now that you have had a vivid description of the school you can have an easy guess. No, no! How can the uniform be the classic blue and white with a blue tie-on tie? It was saffron and white (gasp!). I mean the saffron that hits you in your face right into your eyes. 'Slapping Saffron' as I had named it. And to top it all a saffron tie (God give me strength how did I go like that daily there?!) with the letters SVHV in blue in the middle of the tie ( The cherry on the cake!!) So every morning you are in the school surrounded by hundreds of saffron whites all over the place. Mini-sadhus.

            Poor girls, (Fine. This post is not about my escapades with lakshmi s or padma s. This is just about me and some characters) I had all my sympathy for them. Saffron pajamas, saffron kurtas, Saffron Ribbons!! The tacky ones made it a saffron riot with saffron bindis, saffron bangles and whatever else you can get in saffron in the market (After all, any sane shopkeeper won't have saffron sandals or saffron bags on display!). Every Monday we had the assembly in the lawn (This one didn't have a playground. But we still had a Physical Training lecture. Will tell you about it!). So imagine the assembly. The whole lawn in saffron, topped with white blobs. Saffron in the first floor all over the second floor!! Oh the walls of course! (You know the colour. Saffron and white. I had got tired by then. The blackboards were really black thanks be to Chidambara Vinayagar!)

The principal was a stout middle aged woman I don't remember her name. (I do remember being scared by her on the very first day!). She would be any loving woman IF she spoke softly but her tone was one which would evoke a stammered response from a 9 th grade student even. Everything about her screamed "STRICT". Her aide, the vice-principal, again a lady in her mid-life, was even more over powering. To my horror I found out later she took Chemistry for us! Her name was Rani by the way! (That was a needless bit of information. But anyways as much as these characters instilled a deep sense of fear, I was sure these were one-piece and I wouldn't get to see any of them anywhere! I was in awe!) But still there was hope; the principal did not take any classes for us!

I remember this particular class of Ms.Rani, when she had asked me for an answer in front of the class. I answered "air". That was the right answer by the way. She was mortified. I was paled to death. I was mentally chastising myself to have carelessly believed "air" to have been the right answer! I always believed she was pouncing upon hapless ones at the next available opportunity. She had still not recovered. I was 90 miles/sec into my upcoming coma. Shocked as shell, she turned into á la Queen Elizabeth ( you know "rani" .. Queen. It was a pun). Suddenly Chemistry lecture turned into phonetics class. She started teaching me how to pronounce " a i r" properly. "It is not air" she said. "It is 'yare'. Say it properly". I thanked all my stars and blurted out the "correct answer" that she expected "Yare" I said. My soul resisted the 'air' to come out like that but it was "yare" as Rani 'miss' wanted. "Yare". It took out the "yare" in my lungs as I said it. "Yes yare, that is right she said. I sat down. It has been 10 years since that "Yare incident" it is still in my memory as crisp paper.

Other than that eventful chemistry class, the physical education class was something to remember. I can challenge you about never having undergone such a P.T class for 7th grade students ever anywhere in any part of the globe. First of all, the unavailability of a ground posed restrictions. So we had P.T hour in class (!!). Okay so it was essentially a free hour you would think. Nope. A P.T sir used to come to class and teach (Would you believe this!!) about the dimensions of a basketball court, the length of a cricket pitch, all possible lengths and breadths of a football ground and all obnoxious numbers and measurements in connection with sports that you don’t even play in India!! To top it all we had quizzes about that crap! But in my second year there we did have the service of the bus (Same. Saffron bus. With a white line in the middle with the school's name!! By now you must have been collecting a relief fund in my name I know!) which took us to a nearby ground and brought us back after the little bit of play we managed to squeeze in ( The bus ride back and forth ate up at least 20 minutes of the available 40).

If Mahalaxmi 'miss' in my 1 st standard was a memory, so is Ms. Rani and the booming principal. After all she made me sing in the annual day function. Guess what the theme was, national integration. And so it was colour themed. And so we were wearing clothes coded colourfully fitting to the theme. (Yes, you know where I am getting to?). It was a group song. We, in the group singing the song, all wore dresses with the colours of the flag!! ( Obviously.It had saffron in it too! Biiig mystery!) Luckily I was neither in the saffron, nor green, nor the white group. As the strict Ms. Rani looked on sternly to make sure we sung properly as we had practiced, I sang on taking in the faces of parents in the melee of saffron of students (The uniform was a MUST on such occasions!!). I sang in the middle of the group. In front of the mike. I didn't have the jacket of the colour Ms.Rani had suggested me to buy. In fact no shop in Tuticorin (I believe in India too..) sells a coat of the colour Ms.Rani had wanted me to wear. So I had stuck colour paper of the shade of her choice on the brand new black jacket I had bought for this event. (I never wore that fevicol smelling jacket again. The fevicol smell might go but the stains of embarrassment in that jacket were unwashable!). I still have that photograph of mine standing in the middle of the flag formation wearing the jacket of an unvelievable colour! Dark Blue!

டாடா உருக்காலை தலைவர் பி. முத்துராமனோ, தூத்துக்குடியில் டைடானியம் ஆலை நிறுவுவதை ஏதோ பெரிய 'தொண்டு நிறுவனம்' அமைப்பது போல அறிக்கை விட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார். தென்தமிழகம் பொருளாதாரரீதியாகப் பிற்பட்டு இருப்பதாகவும், அதனால் டாடா நிறுவனம் இந்த ஆலையை இங்கு அமைப்பதாகவும் அளக்காமல் அள்ளி விட்டுக்கிட்டிருந்தார் (இன்னமும் இக்கதையை சில பொறுக்கிகள் விட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்). பின்னர் தமிழக அரசு பின்வாங்கி அரசு நிலக் கையகப்படுத்தலில் ஈடுபடாது எனவும் அது டாடாவின் தலைவலி எனவும் கூறிக் கருணாநிதி தன் கையைக் கழுவினார். பொது மக்கள் சிலர் ஏக்கருக்கு 5 லட்சம் கொடுத்தால் தங்கள் நிலத்தைக் கொடுக்கத் தயார் என்று கூற முத்துராமனோ ஏக்கருக்கு ஐம்பதாயிரத்துக்கு மேல் சல்லிக்காசு கூடக் கொடுக்க முடியாது; அவர்க்ள் என்ன தங்கத்தின் மேல் உட்காந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்ற நினைப்பா? வேண்டுமானால் அந்த மணலை அவர்களே வைத்துக் கொள்ளட்டும் என வீராப்புப் பேசினார். முதலாளித்துவத்தின் திமிர் எப்படி தாண்டவமாடுகிறது பாருங்கள். ஒரு ஏக்கர் 50 கோடிக்குக் குறையாமல் போகும் காலத்தில் டாடா கனிமவளம் மிக்க்ப் பத்தாயிரம் ஏக்கர் நிலத்தை 50 கோடிக்குக் கேட்கிறது. கேட்கிறவன் கேணையனா இருந்தா கேப்பையில நெய்யி வடியுதுன்னு கூட சொல்லலாம்....அப்படிங்கிற மாதிரிதான் நம்மவர் கதை இருக்கிறது. உண்மையிலேயே தென்தமிழக மக்களின் வாழ்வில் விளக்கேற்றி வைக்கும் நோக்கத்தோடு வந்திருந்தால் நிலங்களைப் பிடுங்கி அவர்களை ஓட்டாண்டி ஆக்குவானேன்? வெட்டுகின்ற கனிமத்திற்கு 'உரிமத் தொகை' அதாவது ராயல்டி கொடுத்து விட்டுப் போக வேண்டியது தானே. வியாபாரம் என்றால் வியாபாரம் பேசாமல் பெரிய பரோபகாரம் பண்ணுவான் போல் பீத்திக் கொள்வானேன்?

உண்மை என்னவென்றால், டைட்டானியம் ஒரு அரிய கனிம வகையைச் சார்ந்தது. டைட்டானியம் இயற்கையிலேயே கடல் இயக்கத்தால் தென்தமிழகக் கடற்கரையில் இடைவிடாமல் குவிந்து வருகிறது. அதனால் தென் தமிழகத்தைத் தவிர இந்த ஆலையை அமைப்பதற்கு உலகத்திலேயே சிறந்த இடம் வேறு இல்லை. அதே நேரத்தில், டைடானியம் டை ஆக்சைடு தயாரிக்கும் தொழிற்சாலைகள் சுற்றுப்புறச் சூழலை மிகவும் மாசுபடுத்திப் பாழ்படுத்தக் கூடியவை. அப்பகுதியில் வாழும் மக்கள் பல நோய்களுக்கு ஆளாவார்கள். இவற்றைத் தடுக்க வேண்டுமானால் நிறையப் பணம் செலவழித்து கழிவுநீர் சுத்திகரிப்பு ஆலைகள் அமைக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால் பணப் பேராசை பிடித்த பெருந் தொழில் முதலாளிகள் அரசாங்கத்தை லஞ்சம் கொடுத்துச் சரிகட்டி சுற்றுப்புறத்தை மனிதர்கள் வாழ வகையற்றதாக மாற்றி விடுவார்கள். இந்த மாதிரியான ஏமாற்று வேலைகளெல்லாம் வளர்ந்த நாடுகளில் செல்லுபடியாகாதென்பதால் தமிழர்கள் போல இளிச்சவாயர்கள் இருக்கும் இடத்தைத் தேடி பார்சிக்களும் பனியாக்களும் வந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். ஸ்டெரிலைட் தூத்துக்குடி வந்த கதையும் இப்படித்தான். அமெரிக்காவில் டைட்டானியம் ஆலை நடத்தி சுற்றுச்சூழலை மாசுபடுத்திய 'டூ பான்ட்' நிறுவனத்தின் மீது இன்றளவும் வழக்குகள் நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன. இது போன்ற மேற்கத்திய நிறுவனங்கள் டாடா, பிர்லா, ரிலையன்ஸ் போன்ற புல்லுருவிகளின் துணையால் தமிழ்நாட்டைக் காடாக்கத் துணிந்து விட்டார்கள்.

தென்தமிழகத்தில் யாரும் டாடா டைடானியம் ஆலை வரவில்லையென்றால் செத்துப் போய்விட மாட்டார்கள். முதலில் தென்தமிழ்நாடு பின்தங்கியது என்பது தவறான கணிப்பு..இல்லை..தப்புக் கணக்கு. தமிழகத்திலேயே அதிக கல்வி விழுக்காடு அதிக தொழில்நுட்ப மாணவர்கள் மற்றும் சிறந்த பொது சுகாதாரம், விழிப்புணர்வு என எல்லாவற்றிலும் முன்னேறியது தென்தமிழகம். டாடா போன்ற பெரிய 'வெங்காய' தொழிற்சாலைகள் இல்லையென்பதால் பின்தங்கியது என்பது மடத்தனம். அப்படிப் பார்த்தால் பெரும்பாலான டாடா ஆலைகள் இருக்கும் பீகாரும், ஜார்க்கண்டும் அல்லவா முன்னேறிய மாநிலங்களாக இன்று இருக்க வேண்டும்!!! அவற்றின் நிலைமை என்ன என்று எல்லாருக்கும் தெரியும்.

இப்போது மீண்டும் நிலம் கையகப்படுத்துவதில் உதவிசெய்யக் கோரி டாடா தமிழக அரசை அணுகியிருக்கிறது. வேண்டுமானால் உங்கள் கார் உற்பத்தி செய்யும் தொழிற்சாலையைத் தூத்துக்குடியில் தொடங்குங்கள் என்று சொல்வதிற்கில்லாமல் கருணாநிதியும் அவர்களுக்குத் தலைவணங்கி இந்த நிலம் பிடுங்கிகளுக்கு உதவி செய்யும் படி தூத்துக்குடி மற்றும் திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர்களுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளளார்.

தென்தமிழ் நாட்டு மக்கள் செருப்படி கொடுத்து ஓட ஓட முடுக்கி விட்டால் தான் இந்தக் கொள்ளைக் கும்பல் ஓட்டம் பிடிக்கும்!! அந்த நாள் மிகத் தொலைவில் இல்லை.

There was this girl Monica who used to be my 'best friend'. These were ultimate words to solemnize one's relationship in his childhood. It is said with utmost emotion and expression that all Karan Johar movies fail to evoke such a situation. So back to The Girl in question. She used to bring curd rice daily. But the day she got to know I liked ladies finger (okra) the frequency of finding those world class roasted veggies in her stainless steel tiffin box increased. (How romantic! are you thinking?) Well now that is how innocence works!

Now I don't remember the happenings of the incident so perfectly. After all, my first stint with a girl happened in first standard. (Okay I am not a moron, stalking girls or stuff like that. It just so happened that I had a crush on the 'okra girl'. Not that I knew what a 'crush' meant. I just liked her. Again, child's innocence at play!)

It was any other afternoon we were having lunch in the school playground in the shades of the trees in the campus. After lunch ( I don't remember how it happened) but we danced in the school stage for everybody to see just like that, no music, nothing! I still have doubts whether that really happened or it was just a dream. It is a vague childhood memory. We were punished to 'kneel down' on the stage (that was side by side, next to each other! I don't remember who that 'intelligent' teacher was!)

We parted as I moved with my dad owing to his transferrable job to Calcutta. My 'innocent' mind (which I assume you think is not as innocent as I claim it to be!) didn't know that I have to get her telephone number and address in the least. So Monica was left behind with Erode. But then came, Vijayalakshmi, in Calcutta. Okay here's another aspect there have been no dearth of Lakshmi's in my life. There was one Mahalaxmi (My 1 st standard English and Math teacher. Okay don't say I cheated on Monica simultaneously. We both liked her. One more common thing between us.) and then Vijayalakshmi, there was another '...'lakshmi (I don't remember!) in the all boys' school where I was transferred to in Calcutta ( again a teacher, desperate measures!!). Then there was the plain Lakshmi in Tuticorin and so many unnamed and once seen Lakshmi's all over where I 've been! I guess the goddess of wealth had blessed me with her incarnations all through my childhood from Erode, through Calcutta to Tuticorin.

After Tuticorin, I became a balloon. I lost all my charm I guess (If that doesn't sound too narcissistic!) They say salt in the air makes you fat. But then fate decided otherwise and I put on so much of height (you use put on weight don't you? not put on height?) after completing my 12 th standard all the weight got distributed homogeneously in my body and I became a stick!

In my 12 th I finally broke the jinx of Lakshmi and got my name linked with Deepika s, Vidya s and Selvi s thanks to friends on the look out of "leg pulling". Not that any of those girls were ugly or anything. But I was essentially in my world. Childhood had disappeared.

Anyways, I still remember Mahalaxmi 'miss' who used to treat me with a little 'double standard'. I was her favourite too. Why would she visit me at home if I was missing from class for 2 days owing to illness? Or for that matter why would Monica teach me the secrets of perfecting the art of chewing curd rice and eating in order to avoid stomach aches (I eat rice hurriedly even now. No time to chew like a cow!! I wonder if she is still eating like that. She must have spent a quarter of her life just in that if she is doing so! Man she used to eat one mouthful for 10 minutes or so.. Really slow.. I was dumbstruck!). Nor would Vijayalakshmi lend me her precious books for a day! (She was your typical nerd girl who would die saving her rough work from fire!!)

I am still essentially shy!

Dell began offering consumer systems running Ubuntu in May 2007. Ubuntu’s Gutsy Gibson has been available on laptops since October.

The OEM and laptop testing teams of Dell have been testing the code and hardware drivers for several weeks and are ready to launch the Ubuntu 7.10 Laptop based on the free and open source Ubuntu Linux operating system.

“We believe Ubuntu 7.10 is a solid step forward <span style="font-weight:bold;">for both Linux enthusiasts as well as the mainstream consumer market</span>,” wrote Daniel Judd, Product Group Strategist on the Dell2Dell blog on Tuesday. “The answer is simple. With any operating system, we take gold code and take the time to do extensive testing on our systems to make sure that customers have as few issues as possible.”

Daniel Judd, Dell product manager has cited “cool” 3-D visual effects, easier desktop search for applications and the “ability to quickly switch between users and easily share a system with family members” as key new features of Ubuntu’s 7.10 release. He has also cited two minor Dell developed innovations much in demand by younger generation of laptop users — pre-installation of Flash and improved recovery options — as other significant enhancements for Gutsy Gibbon on Dell consumer PCs.

Judd also one key request was the ability to watch DVD movies from the Dell Linux desktop. “We totally agree and that’s why we now include built-in DVD movie playback with all Ubuntu 7.10 systems.The experience we wanted is simple — when you put a movie in, it plays. It is easy enough for a child and an example of the steps we are taking to make Ubuntu as enjoyable as possible.

கடந்த செப்டம்பர்-18, 2007 அன்று "வாஷிங்டன் போஸ்ட்'டில் ஒரு கட்டுரை. "கடல் கால்வாய்த் திட்டம் இந்தியாவில் ஒரு மத உணர்வு தடங்கலால் தடைப்பட்டுள்ளது' என்ற ராமலட்சுமியின் கட்டுரை.

"தேசிய கடல் பூங்கா'விலிருந்து 25 கி.மீ.க்கு எந்தவொரு வளர்ச்சித் திட்டமும் வரக்கூடாது என்ற "வனவிலங்குச் சட்டம்' கூறுகிறது. "தேசிய கடல் பூங்கா' எனவும், "பல்லுயிரியல் பாதுகாப்பு பகுதி' எனவும், மன்னார் வளைகுடா, யுனெஸ்கோவால் வரையறுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அத்தகைய "சுற்றுச்சூழல் விதிகளை' மீறி இந்தத் திட்டம் வருகிறது.

* 1992 முதல் 1996 வரை இந்தப் பகுதியில் மீன் உற்பத்தி 55 ஆயிரம் டன்னிலிருந்து, 2001-ம் ஆண்டு 2 லட்சம் டன்னாக 4 மடங்கு உயர்ந்துள்ளது. அந்த உற்பத்திக்கு இந்தத் திட்டம் ஊறு விளைவிக்கும்.

* தென்மேற்குப் பருவக்காற்று காலத்தில், உயிரினங்கள் மன்னார் வளைகுடாவிலிருந்து, பாக் விரிகுடா செல்லும். மற்ற காலத்தில் மறுதிசை செல்லும். அவை பாம்பன் பாலம் வழியாகவும், அரிமுனை வழியாகவும் செல்லும். கால்வாய் தோண்டுவதால் அந்த உயிரினங்களின் நடமாட்டம் தடைப்படும்.

* தூர்வாரி ஆழப்படுத்தினால், கடலுக்கு அடியில் உள்ள தாவர, விலங்கு இனங்கள் அழிந்துவிடும்.

* "அரிதான உயிரினமான' கடல் பசுக்கள், பருவ மாற்றத்தில் இடம் பெயர்பவை. அவை அழிந்துவிடுமென, மறைந்த பேராசிரியர் சென்னை பல்கலைக்கழக "மானுடயியல்' துறை தலைவர் சுதர்சன் எச்சரித்திருந்தார்.

* "தமிழ்நாடு அறிவியல் கழக' முன்னாள் தலைவரான மறைந்த பேராசிரியர் சுதர்சன், "சேது கால்வாய்த் திட்டம்', சுற்றுச்சூழலையும், மீனவர் வாழ்வுரிமையையும் அழித்து விடுமென ஓர் ஆய்வு அறிக்கையை 2004-ம் ஆண்டே வெளியிட்டார்.

* கட்டுமான காலத்திலும், செயல்படும் காலத்திலும் கடலை மாசுபடுத்தும் கப்பலிலிருந்து கசியும் எண்ணெய் துளிகள், கிரீஸ், பெயிண்ட், பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகள் போன்ற மாசுபடுத்தும் பொருள்கள், கடல் நீரோட்டத்தில் கலந்து இயற்கையைத் தொடர்ந்து அழித்து வரும்.

* கப்பல் போக்குவரத்தால், அந்நிய பொருள்களும், உயிர்களும், வங்காள விரிகுடாவிலிருந்து, இந்துமகா கடலுக்கும், திசைமாறிப் பயணமாகி, பகுதிசார் உயிரின வகைகளை, சிதறடித்துவிடும் ஆபத்து அதிகமாக உள்ளது.

* "பல்லுயிரியல் பாதுகாப்புப் பகுதி' யாக இருக்கும் மன்னார் வளைகுடாவின் செழிப்பான இயற்கை சூழலும், அதன் விசித்திரமான வளமாக இருக்கும் தாவர இனமும், விலங்கு இனமும் அழிந்துவிடும் ஆபத்து உள்ளது.

* திட்டமிடப்பட்டுள்ள சிறிய கால்வாய் வழியாகச் செல்லும்போது, கப்பல்கள் முட்டிக் கொண்டு விபத்து ஏற்பட அதிக வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. அப்போது சிதறும் எண்ணெய், அடித்தள வண்ணப் பூச்சுகள் ஆகியவை கடல் வாழ் உயிரினங்களுக்கும், அவற்றின் வாழ்விற்கும் எதிரானவை.

* அமெரிக்கக் கடலில், 1990 முதல் 1999 வரை 50 ஆயிரம் எண்ணெய் சிதறல்களை, "எண்ணெய் அல்லாத இதர சரக்குகளை ஏற்றி வந்த கப்பல்களே' ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளன. அதன் விளைவாக அமெரிக்க கடலில் இப்போதெல்லாம் மீன்கள் மற்றும் கடல் வாழ் உயிரினங்கள் மிகவும் குறைந்துவிட்டன.

* கடந்த 10 ஆண்டுகளில், இத்தகைய எண்ணெய் அல்லாத சரக்கு கப்பல்கள்தான், "சுற்றுச்சூழலை' கடுமையாகப் பாதித்துள்ளன.

* பவளப்பாறைகள் "மன்னார் வளைகுடா'வின் சிறப்பு அம்சம். அவை கிடைக்கும் தீவுகள் ராமேசுவரத்திற்கும், தூத்துக்குடிக்கும் மத்தியில் உள்ளன. இவை "எண்ணெய் சிதறல்களால் அழிந்துவிடும்.

* கடல் ஆமைகள் இங்கே அதிகம் உள்ளன. கட்டுமானப் பணியே கூட அவற்றின் உயிரைப் பறித்துவிடும்.

* தூர்வாரி ஆழப்படுத்துதலால் ஏற்படும் கடல் நீரோட்ட பாதிப்புகளைப் பற்றி திட்ட ஆதரவாளர்கள் கவலைப்படுவதில்லை.

* தூத்துக்குடிக்கும், ராமேசுவரத்திற்கும் இடையில் இருக்கும் 21 தீவுகள்தான், சுனாமி தாக்குதலிலிருந்து அந்த இரண்டு கரையோர நகரங்களையும் காப்பாற்றியவை. அத்தகைய தீவுகள் இத்திட்டத்தால் அரிக்கப்பட்டு, அழியும் வாய்ப்பு அதிகமாகவே இருக்கிறது.

* ஐ.நா.வின் ஆய்வில், இந்தியாவில் "பல்லுயிரியல் பாதுகாப்புப் பகுதிகளாக' 13 இடங்கள் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டன.

"யுனெஸ்கோ'வின் அந்தத் தேர்வில், மிக முக்கிய பகுதிகளாக மூன்றை முடிவு செய்தார்கள். அவை நந்தாதேவி, நீலகிரி மற்றும் மன்னார் வளைகுடா. அதில் , "மன்னார் வளைகுடா'வின் பல்லுயிரியலை பாதுகாக்க' ஐ.நா.வின் வளர்ச்சித் திட்டத்திற்கு (UNDP) பெருந்தொகை ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவர்களது பாதுகாப்பு முயற்சி, சேது கால்வாய்த் திட்டத்தால் வீணாகி விடுமென மத்திய அரசுக்குத் தகவல் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

ரூ. 2600 கோடி முதல் ரூ. 3500 கோடி வரை சேதுத் திட்டத்துக்குச் செலவாகும். இதுவரை ரூ. 300 கோடி செலவழிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

* ஜேகப் ஜான் என்ற பொருளாதார நிபுணர் மேற்கண்ட ஆய்வில், "திட்ட அறிக்கை நகல்' அடிப்படையில் இத்திட்டம் பொருளாதார ரீதியில் லாபம் இல்லை என்கிறார்.

"எகனாமிக் அண்ட் பொலிடிகல்' வீக்லி-2007, ஜூலை-2ல் வெளியான அவரது கட்டுரையில், இத்திட்ட ஆதரவாளர்களின் வாதம் தவறு என விளக்கியுள்ளார். "எந்த ஓர் இந்திய மேற்கு கடற்கரை நகரிலிருந்து, இந்திய கிழக்கு கடற்கரைக்குச் செல்லும் கப்பலும், சேது வழி செல்வதால் எந்தப் பலனும் பெறப்போவதில்லை. சேது கால்வாய் உள்ளே செல்லவும் திரும்ப வெளியே வரவும் , "பைலட் கப்பல்' இரண்டு மணி நேரம் எடுக்கும். தனியான சர்வதேச வாடகைக் கட்டணம் கோரப்படும். கால்வாய் வழியே செல்வதற்கு தனிக் கட்டணமும் வசூலிக்கப்படும். இவை கப்பலின் செலவைக் கூட்டிவிடும் என்கிறார் அவர்.

* தூத்துக்குடியிலிருந்து புறப்படும் கப்பல்களுக்கு 22 மணி நேர பயணம் குறையும் என்றால், ஐரோப்பாவிலிருந்து புறப்படும் கப்பல்களுக்கு வெறும் 8 மணி நேரத்தை மட்டுமே மிச்சப்படுத்தும். ஆகவே, வெளிநாட்டுக் கப்பல்களுக்கு சேது கால்வாய் அதிகம் தேவைப்படாது. இதனால் திட்டத்திற்கு ஆகும் செலவைக்கூட ஈடுகட்ட முடியாமல் இழப்புதான் மிஞ்சும் என்கிறார் அவர்.

சேது: அபாயத்தின் மறுபக்கம்!

சேது சமுத்திரத் திட்டத்தை எதிர்ப்பவர்கள் "தமிழினத் துரோகிகள்' என முத்திரை குத்தியிருக்கிறது திமுக அரசு.

உலகெங்கும் சூழலியல் மாற்றங்கள் குறித்த பேரச்சமும் விழிப்புணர்வும் விசுவரூபமெடுத்து வரும் நிலையில், இந்தியா தவிர்த்து வேறு எந்த நாட்டிலும் இவ்வளவு பிரமாண்டமான ஒரு திட்டத்தை இத்தனை சாதாரணமாக நிறைவேற்ற எத்தனிக்க முடியாது.

சூழலியல் மாறுபாடுகளிலேயே மிக அபாயகரமானதும் மர்மமானதும் கடல் சூழல்தான். இந்தியாவைப் பொருத்தவரையில் இதற்குச் சரியான உதாரணம் சேது சமுத்திரத் திட்டம். ஆழம் குறைந்த இந்திய - இலங்கை கடற்பகுதியில் கால்வாய் அமைப்பதன் மூலம் இலங்கையைச் சுற்றிச் செல்லும் கப்பல் போக்குவரத்தை கால்வாய் வழியே மேற்கொள்வதற்கான திட்டம் இது.

தமிழர்களின் நூற்றாண்டு கனவாகவும் மாபெரும் பொருளாதாரப் புரட்சித் திட்டமாகவும் புனையப்பட்டிருக்கும் இத்திட்டத்துக்கு 1860-ல் அடித்தளமிட்டவர் கமாண்டர் டெய்லர். தொடர்ந்து டென்னிசன், ஸ்டோர்டர்ட், ராபர்ட்சன், ஜான்கோட், பிரிஸ்டோ எனப் பலரால் இத்திட்டத்துக்கான சாத்தியம் குறித்து சாதகமான அறிக்கைகள் தாக்கல் செய்யப்பட்டபோதும் ஆங்கிலேயே அரசு இத்திட்டத்தைச் செயல்படுத்தத் தயக்கம் காட்டியது.

சுதந்திர இந்தியாவில் ஏ. ராமசாமி முதலியார், சி.வி. வெங்கடேசுவரன், நாகேந்திர சிங், எச்.ஆர். லட்சுமிநாராயணன் என அனைவரும் சாதகமான அறிக்கைகளையே அளித்தனர். இவர்கள் அனைவரின் அறிக்கைகளிலும் உள்ள முக்கிய ஒற்றுமை - சூழலியல் பிரக்ஞை இல்லாததுதான்.

இத்தகைய திட்டங்களைச் செயலாக்கும் முன் தீவிரமான பல கட்ட ஆய்வுகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட வேண்டும். ஆனால், சேது சமுத்திரத் திட்டத்தைப் பொருத்தவரையில் அத்தகைய ஆய்வுகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்படவில்லை. கடலியல் விஞ்ஞானிகள், மீனவர்களின் யோசனைகள் ஏற்கப்படவில்லை.

சேது சமுத்திரத் திட்டம் செயல்படுத்தப்படும் மன்னார் வளைகுடா பகுதி ஆசியாவின் உச்சபட்ச பராமரிப்பு கோரும் கடற்கரை உயிரியக்கப் பகுதிகளில் ஒன்று. 5,000-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட உயிரினங்கள் இருந்த இப்பகுதியில், ஏற்கெனவே, கடல் சூழல் மாசால் ஆயிரத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட உயிரினங்கள் அழிந்துவிட்டன. தற்போதுள்ளதாகக் கருதப்படும் 4000 உயிரினங்களில் 1500 வகைகள் அருகிவரும் வகைகளாகக் கண்டறியப்பட்டவை.

மேலும், இப்பகுதிக்கு கிடைத்துள்ள பெருங்கொடை ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகள் வயதுடைய பவளப்பாறைகள், படிமங்கள். பவளப்பாறை இனங்களில் உலகிலுள்ள 82 சத வகையினங்கள் இங்கு காணப்படுகின்றன.

இத்திட்டத்தால் கடலின் நீரியங்குதிசை, நீரோட்டத்தின் ஒழுங்கு, அலைகளோட்டம், சூரிய ஒளி ஊடுருவல் மாறுபடும். இதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக உயிரினங்களின் வாழ்வியல்பு, உறைவிடம், இடப்பெயர்வு பாதிக்கப்படும்.

சூழலியல் முக்கியத்துவமிக்க இப்பகுதி பேராபத்தானதும்கூட. வானிலையாளர்களால் அதிக கவனத்துடன் கண்காணிக்கப்படும் இப்பகுதி இயற்கைச் சீற்றங்களுக்கு அதிகம் இலக்காகும் அபாயமிக்க பகுதி. இங்கு ஏற்படும் எந்த மாற்றமும் தென்னிந்திய கடலோர மாவட்டங்கள் அனைத்திலும் பாதிப்புகளை ஏற்படுத்தும்.

இத்தகைய ஒரு பகுதியில் சேது சமுத்திரத் திட்டம் போன்ற அசுரத்தனமான திட்டங்களை மேற்கொள்வதற்கும் அணுகுண்டுகளை வெடித்துப்பார்ப்பதற்கும் அதிக வேறுபாடில்லை.

ஒருபுறம், அடிப்படையிலேயே நகர்வுத்தன்மை வாய்ந்த கடலில் கால்வாயின் நிரந்தரத்தன்மை குறித்து தொழில்நுட்ப ரீதியிலான கேள்வி எழுப்பப்படுகிறது. மறுபுறம், இத்திட்டத்துக்கான செலவு, பராமரிப்பு, சுங்க வரி ஆகியவற்றின் அடிப்படையில் இத்திட்டம் பொருளாதார ரீதியாக லாபகரமானதாக அமையுமா என்ற கேள்வி எழுப்பப்படுகிறது. இன்னொருபுறம் லட்சக்கணக்கான மீனவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை கேள்விக்குறியாகியுள்ளது.

இந்நிலையில், சூழலியலில் பெரும் ஆபத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும் அபாயமிக்க இத்திட்டத்தைச் செயலாக்கத் துடிப்பது ஏன் என்ற கேள்விக்கு இன்றளவும் அறிவியல்பூர்வமான - நேர்மையான பதில் அரசிடம் இல்லை.

இந்தச் சரிவுக்கு என்ன காரணம் என்றால், கிராமங்கள் மற்றும் ஊரகப் பகுதிகளில் 2001 டிசம்பரில் 32,496 வங்கிக் கிளைகள் செயல்பட்டன. ஆனால், 2006 டிசம்பரில் வங்கிக் கிளைகளின் எண்ணிக்கை 30,586 ஆக குறைந்துவிட்டன. அதாவது, கடந்த 5 ஆண்டுகளில் 1910 கிளைகள் மூடப்பட்டுள்ளன. பாரத ரிசர்வ் வங்கி 3 மாதங்களுக்கு ஒருமுறை வெளியிடும் தகவல் அறிக்கை (டிசம்பர் 2006)யில் இந்த விவரங்கள் உள்ளன.

ஒருபக்கம், தேசிய வங்கிகள், பழைய தனியார் வங்கிகள், புதிய தலைமுறை தனியார் வங்கிகள் ஒன்றோடொன்று போட்டிபோட்டுக் கொண்டு பெரும் நகரங்களிலும், வணிக மையங்களிலும் புதிய கிளைகளை அமைக்கின்றன. இன்னும் சொல்லப்போனால், தேசிய வங்கிகள் வெளிநாடுகளில் அன்றாடம் புதிய கிளைகளை அமைப்பதில் ஆர்வம் காட்டுகின்றன. இதுவரை தவிர்த்து வந்த பாகிஸ்தான் மற்றும் இலங்கையில் கூட இந்திய வங்கிகள் கிளைகளைத் தொடங்குகின்றன. ஆனால், உள்நாட்டில் கிராமக்கிளைகளை இழுத்து மூடுகின்றன. ஓரிரு பெரிய வங்கிகளில், சம்பந்தப்பட்ட அதிகாரிகளிடம் தொடர்பு கொண்டு விசாரித்ததில் கிடைத்த தகவல் இதுதான்: ""லாபம் ஈட்டாத சிறிய கிளைகளை அருகில் உள்ள பெரிய கிளைகளோடு இணைத்து விட்டோம். நாங்கள் ஒன்றும் கிளைகளை மூடவிடவில்லை.'' என்றனர். இதற்கெல்லாம் என்ன காரணம் என்று ஆராயத் தேவையில்லை. வங்கிகளின் லாபநோக்கம்தான் முக்கியக் காரணம்.

1969-ல் வங்கிகள் தேசியமயமாக்கப்பட்டதை அடுத்து, கிராமங்களில் கிளைகளைத் தொடங்குவதற்கு முழுமூச்சுடன் களம் இறங்கின. அஞ்சல் அலுவலகம், காவல் நிலையம் இல்லாத கிராமங்களில்கூட வங்கிக்கிளைகள் தொடங்கப்பட்டன. கிட்டத்தட்ட 20 ஆண்டுகள் அந்த நிலை நீடித்தது. அதன் பின்னரே இதில் சுணக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது மட்டுமல்ல; வணிகரீதியில் லாபம் தராத கிளைகள் மூடப்பட்டன.

கிராமங்களில் வாழும் மக்களிடையே சேமிப்புப் பழக்கத்தை உருவாக்குதல், அவர்களிடம் வைப்புத்தொகைகளைத் திரட்டுதல் மற்றும் அவர்களுக்குப் பயிர்க்கடன், கால்நடைக் கடன் போன்ற விவசாயக் கடன் உதவி வழங்குதல், அளவுக்கு அதிகமான வட்டி வசூலிக்கும் தனியார் வட்டிக் கடைகளிலிருந்து அவர்களைக் காப்பாற்றுதல் ஆகியவையே அந்த காலகட்டத்தில் அரசின் நோக்கமாக இருந்தது.

1991-ல் அறிமுகமான பொருளாதாரச் சீர்திருத்தத்திற்குப்பின்னர், தேசியமயமாக்கப்பட்ட வங்கிகளும் வணிக ரீதியில் செயல்பட்டு லாபம் ஈட்ட வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் மேலோங்கியது. ஒரு வங்கியின் செயல்திறனுக்கு அடையாளம் அது ஈட்டும் லாபமே என்று கருதப்பட்டது. இப்புதிய சூழலில், கிராமக்கிளைகள் ஒரு சுமையாகக் கருதப்பட்டன.

நல்லவேளையாக, காலம் தாழ்ந்தேனும், மீண்டும் அரசின் எண்ண ஓட்டம் மாறத் தொடங்கியுள்ளது. பாரதப் பிரதமருக்கு பொருளாதார ஆலோசனை வழங்கும் உயர்மட்டக் குழுவின் தலைவரும், ரிசர்வ் வங்கியின் முன்னாள் கவர்னருமான சி. ரங்கராஜன் அண்மையில் வெளியிட்டுள்ள யோசனை நம்பிக்கையூட்டுவதாக உள்ளது. கிராமங்களில் மீண்டும் வங்கிக்கிளைகளை பெரிய அளவில் அமைக்க வேண்டும் என வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளார் அவர்.

வங்கிகள் தங்கள் கிளைகளைக் கிராமங்களில் தொடங்குவதை ஊக்குவிக்கும் வகையில், கிராமங்களில் புதிய கிளைகளை அமைக்கும் வங்கிகளுக்கே பெரிய நகரங்களில் கிளைகளை அமைக்க அனுமதி வழங்க வேண்டும் என்ற யோசனையைத் தெரிவித்துள்ளார் ரங்கராஜன். பார்க்கப்போனால், இப்படி ஒரு திட்டம் கடந்த காலங்களில் செயல்படுத்தப்பட்டது. ஆனால், காலப்போக்கில் ரிசர்வ் வங்கியும் அடுத்தடுத்து பொறுப்பேற்ற அரசுகளும் கிராமக்கிளைகளை அமைப்பதில் முனைப்பு காட்டத் தவறிவிட்டன என்பதே உண்மை.

தற்போது, பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சி 9 சதவிகிதத்தைத் தாண்டிவிட்டது குறித்து பெருமிதம் அடைகிறோம். ஆனால், வேளாண்துறை, தொழில்துறை மற்றும் சேவைத்துறை ஆகிய மூன்று துறைகளிலும் பரவலாக, ஒரே சீராக வளர்ச்சி ஏற்படவில்லை. மாறாக, ஒருபக்கம், தொழில் உற்பத்தித் துறையும், இன்னொருபக்கம், தகவல்தொழில்நுட்பம், தொலைத்தொடர்பு, தொலைக்காட்சி, ஹோட்டல் தொழில், சுற்றுலாத் தொழில் உள்ளிட்ட சேவைத் தொழில்கள் அண்மைக்காலமாக அபரிமித வளர்ச்சி கண்டுள்ளன. இதன் பயனாகவே 9 சதவிகித வளர்ச்சி சாத்தியமாகி உள்ளது. இதில் வேளாண் துறையின் பங்கு குறைவே. எனவேதான், கிராமப்புறங்களில் வளர்ச்சியின் பலன் தென்படவில்லை. வறுமை ஒழிப்பு கைகூடவில்லை. புதிய வேலைவாய்ப்புகள் உருவாகவில்லை.

இதை உணர்ந்துதான், மத்திய அரசு வேளாண் துறையில் ரூ. 25,000 கோடி வேளாண் துறையில் முதலீடு செய்வதற்கு முன்வந்துள்ளது. கிராமப்புற வளர்ச்சிக்கு அரசின் புதிய முதலீடுகள் அவசியம் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை. ஆனால் அதுமட்டும் போதாது. விவசாயிகளுக்கு உரிய நேரத்தில், சரியான அளவில் விவசாயக் கடன் தங்குதடையின்றி கிடைக்கச் செய்வதும் அவசியம். அதேபோல், கிராம மக்களிடையே சிறுசேமிப்பு பழக்கத்தை உருவாக்குதல், அவர்களது வைப்புத்தொகைகளைத் திரட்டி நியாயமான வட்டி வழங்குதல் போன்ற பணிகளைச் செம்மையாக மேற்கொள்வதற்கு, கிராமங்களில் வங்கிகள் இயங்க வேண்டும்.

கிராமக் கிளைகளில் பணிபுரிய, ஊழியர்களைத் தேர்வு செய்வதிலும் கவனம் தேவை. நகர வாழ்க்கை முறைகளில் ஊறிப்போன ஊழியர்களைக் கட்டாயப்படுத்தி கிராமங்களுக்கு அனுப்பினால், உரிய பலன் கிடைக்காது என்பதைக் கடந்தகால அனுபவம் உணர்த்தியுள்ளது. கிராமச்சூழலில் பணிபுரிய, விருப்ப அடிப்படையில் ஊழியர்களைத் தேர்வு செய்தால், அர்ப்பணிப்பு உணர்வுடன் அவர்கள் பணிபுரிவதற்கான வாய்ப்புகள் அதிகம்.

வளர்ச்சியின் பலன் கிராமங்களில் வாழும் மக்களுக்கும் விரைவில் வந்து சேரும் என்பதற்கான அறிகுறியாக புதிய வங்கிக் கிளைகளின் செயல்பாடுகள் அமைய வேண்டும்.

சீரழியும் சிறுதொழில்கள்

உலகமயமாக்கல், தாராளமயமாக்கல் என்ற நிலையில் சிறு தொழில்கள், குடிசைத் தொழில்கள், வறுமைக்கோட்டிற்குக் கீழ் உள்ள மக்கள் ஈடுபடுகின்ற தொழில்கள் யாவும் பெரிதும் பாதிப்படைந்துள்ளன.

கைதயாரிப்பு தீப்பெட்டித் தொழிலில்

• சிவகாசி,
• ராஜபாளையம்,
• கோவில்பட்டி,
• எட்டயபுரம்,
• கழுகுமலை,
• சங்கரன்கோவில்,
• வாசுதேவநல்லூர்,
• குடியாத்தம்,
• செய்யாறு

போன்ற பகுதிகளில் லட்சக்கணக்கான ஏழை மக்கள் பல்லாண்டுகளாக ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றனர். முதலில், சிவகாசி அய்ய நாடார் குடும்பத்தினர் கோல்கத்தா சென்று தொழில்நுட்பத்தை அறிந்து வந்து சிவகாசியில் முதன்முதலாக தீப்பெட்டித் தொழிலைத் தொடங்கினர். இத்தொழிலில் சி, டி என்ற இரண்டு பிரிவுகள் உண்டு.
வானம் பார்த்த பூமியில் பல குடும்பங்களுக்கு இத்தொழில் விளக்கேற்றியது. ஆனால் கடந்த பத்து ஆண்டுகளாக இந்த இரண்டு பிரிவுகளும் நலிந்து வருகின்றன. தமிழகம் வந்து தீப்பெட்டியைக் கொள்முதல் செய்த வட மாநில வியாபாரிகள் உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்திலும், பிகாரிலும் தற்பொழுது தொழிலைத் தொடங்கிவிட்டனர். இதனால் இங்கு உற்பத்தி அளவு குறைந்துவிட்டது.

இந்தியாவுக்கு ஒரு நாளைக்கு இரண்டு லட்சம் தீப்பெட்டி பண்டல்கள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. விம்கோ தீப்பெட்டி நிறுவனம் 13 சதவிகிதம் மற்ற இயந்திரத் தீப்பெட்டி ஆலைகள் 18 சதவிகிதம், மீதமுள்ள 69 சதவிகிதம் கைதயாரிப்புப் பிரிவுகளாக இருந்தன. ஆனால், தற்பொழுது, விம்கோ, ஐ.டி.சி போன்ற நிறுவனங்கள் மட்டுமல்லாமல், சில தனியாரும் இயந்திரம் மூலமாகத் தேவையான தீப்பெட்டிகளை உற்பத்தி செய்து விடுகின்றனர்.

ஏற்றுமதி செய்யப்படும் தீப்பெட்டிகள் இயந்திரங்களிலேயே செய்யப்படுகின்றன. கடந்த காலங்களில் இரண்டு லட்சம் பண்டல்கள் உற்பத்தி செய்ய இரண்டு லட்சத்து 45 ஆயிரம் தொழிலாளர்கள் தேவை. இதனால் அதிகமான அளவில் வேலைவாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. தற்பொழுது இயந்திரமயம் காரணமாக தொழிலாளர்களின் வேலைவாய்ப்பு குறைந்துவிட்டது. தீப்பெட்டி ஆலை அதிபர்கள் தங்களுக்கு லாபம் என்று கருதி இயந்திரங்களின் மூலம் உற்பத்தியைத் தொடங்கிவிட்டனர்.

இதுமட்டுமல்லாமல், தீப்பெட்டிக்கான மூலப்பொருள்களின் விலைகளும் கடுமையாக உயர்ந்துவிட்டன. கைதயாரிப்பு தீப்பெட்டி உற்பத்திச் செலவு அதிகரிப்பதனால் தீப்பெட்டி விலையும் அதிகரிக்கிறது. ஐ.டி.சி. போன்ற பெரிய நிறுவனங்கள் இதனால் பாதிக்கப்படுவதில்லை. குறைந்த விலைக்கே தீப்பெட்டிகளை வழங்கக்கூடிய நிலையில் உள்ளன.

விலை அதிகரிப்பால் குடிசைத்தொழில் தீப்பெட்டி பண்டல்கள் விற்பனை ஆகாமல் கிடங்குகளில் முடங்கியுள்ளன. குளோரேட் என்ற மூலப்பொருள் பற்றாக்குறையால் சிறு உற்பத்தியாளர்கள் உற்பத்தியை நிறுத்திவிட்டதால், ஏழை மக்கள் வேலைவாய்ப்புகளை இழக்கின்றனர். பன்னெடுங்காலமாக தெற்கேயுள்ள கரிசல் பூமியில் மக்களின் தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்து வந்த அட்சயப் பாத்திரமாக விளங்கிய தொழில் தற்போது படிப்படியாகச் சிதைந்துள்ளது.
