After two years of debate (harsh at times) over the accuracy of third-party click fraudreports and c

After two years of debate (harsh at times) over the accuracy of third-party click fraudreports and click tracking methodologies, Google seems to have made an abrupt reversal in its position on the subject, as some feel is evidenced by the announcement last week that Google would begin "cooperating" with click fraud firm Click Forensics, its primary rival in the click fraud arena.

But are some in the industry reading too much into this announcement? To what extent will this change in policy help online advertisers in their ongoing struggle with losses from invalid clicks?

It would be difficult to imagine Google and Click Forensics actually working together after two years of publicly slamming each other. With the vast majority of its revenue connected to per-click advertising, Google has a lot to lose if 16-30% of clicks were fraudulent (as reported by Click Forensics) and those clicks were successfully eliminated, and their own publicly stated estimate of the click-fraud rate is a much lower 0.02%.

It's hard to believe that these companies ever could be "best-buddies" with their inherent conflicts in objectives. In fact, reports that the two companies are "working together" appear to overstate the relationship, which (as announced) is simply an agreement to accept automated electronic click complaint reports. That in itself is a significant development for advertisers, as until now, it has seemed as though Google has made the process of reporting invalid clicks unnecessarily difficult and time-consuming for customers, and often with a less-than-favorable outcome. Whether intentional or not, this has resulted in a large number of fraudulent and unwanted clicks to go unreported, as it is simply not cost-effective for most businesses to pursue a refund.

Allowing automated reports and standardizing the reporting format will significantly streamline this process for advertisers, which will undoubtedly result in a sharp increase in the number of reports and volume of questionable clicks being reported. This will not only affect Google's top line directly (as a result of more click refunds) but may significantly increase the staff requirements in the AdWords Click Quality division.

You might think "Wouldn't automation decrease the need for human case reviewers?". Well first of all, the increased volume of click quality complaints will come largely an addition to current reports received through existing channels, as the automation feature only applies to advertisers using Click Forensics's FACTr service. Secondly, you would be mistaken if you assumed that Google would just be accepting all these reports as "accurate and correct" and automatically spewing out refunds. No way! They have only agreed to "receive" the reports in the electronic format, and have made no statements to retract previous statements that Click Forensics's tracking methodologies are "inept" and "fundamentally flawed".

This brings up the second problem. Although, yes, Google will now accept the reports electronically, they are not saying that they will agreewith the reports. The reality is that rejection rate of claims will likely increase, and while they will be refunding a greater number of billed clicks than in the past, they will be refunding a lower number, as a percentage of clicks that are reported.

In my experience with reporting invalid clicks to Google, the process has been grossly overcomplicated and time-consuming, with several layers of case reps having widely varying degrees of training/knowlege. The point here is that this entire process occurs after the report is filed. There is no mention of any changes to the review procedures nor approval policies.

So while we do have the ability to zip a report over to them with a few clicks, which is a much appreciated improvement, what we don't have here is Google finally admitting that Click Forensics' (and other click tracking services') numbers are accurate and that they will cooperate on refunds based on that data. That will never happen. They would in essence be admitting that over 20% of their 2007 revenue was based on false clicks.

One of the biggest problems now with all search advertising networks is that they will not provide advertisers with all the data that they have collected on the clicks they are billing them for (the data they use internally when reviewing complaints but for some reason will not make available in client reports). This include line item data (date, time, IP, etc..) for each click. They have this information, why not make it available?

Yes, it may now be easier to report our data to Google, but it will not be possible to reconcile our data what we are being billed for until they make that information available to us.

This blog name is Webnomena web + phenomena (plural of phenomenon) and this is where I share my observations living the web. This post sums ten month of observations and blogging. I'm not sure what lies ahead but at time like these we can count on it that there will be some changes. Some of these phenomena will vanish and new one will appear. So, before moving on to the very next thing (or maybe backward) I chose some of the most prominent phenomena signifying the Web 2.0 era.

Webnomena

Many to many communication - the old media consisted of only few broadcasting to the masses. It was distant and regulated. You could, with some effort to comment back on a news article yet there was very little chance that your comment will appear in the following edition. Your ability to interact with the newspaperman was limited if at all. Social media changed all that. You can be the news. You can comment almost anywhere instantly. You can interact with news generators. You can follow and listening to the same source on multiple channels (Blog RSS feed, micro-blog, media streaming (pictures, video and audio - blogtalkradio), and comments). It is also easy to find what is going on right now i.e. Web-now - reading the news and the meta-news in real-time, at the same time. News become more conversational - bi-directional. This kind of media is impossible to recruit or regulate - this change comes with both the good and bad.

Google Trend for the term social media

Search engine is not a search engine anymore - it is a spell checker, idiom checker, translator, map and direction, alerts, knowledge base, value comparing tool, research tool, people business and relationship finder, content organizer, content visualizing tool, meaning extractor, entertainment and event planner, tasks based, support micro-format for integration with other tools, API, ad by context placer. And above all it could be a money making machine!! So much data and sooo much more metadata. I'm not sure how to call it anymore but if you want to take on Google it is hard to imagine someone wining by just providing a new magnificent search engine.

Selfless sharing as a strategy - sharing without holding back is the heart of social media. You stay ahead, read a lot of blogs, learn and experience new tools, technologies, means of communication, monitor changes across the web and then share your : information->knowledge->expertise->thoughts->feeling->goals with the community.

Google Trend for the term blog

Digital autobiography (digital life stream)- my, my, my: activity feed, timeline, location, preferences. The meaning of the term profile in the old days was your slow changing private attributes like address, age, marital status. Now, it means a whole lot more. In the social network world the term profile is dynamic and includes your activity, your friend, your friends friends, your relationships, your chosen tools and games and more. There are new ways available for finding influencers and new marketing campaign startegies.

Ultimate empowerment - Anyone can do it and we all have access. Build your own [search, content, network, dashboard, scalable web-app (cloud computing)]. The new web world is more like cafeteria model than restaurant. It is up to you to go and get/build what that you need. Do you want that power or do you want to be served? Not everyone are excited about been empowered, not everyone can, not everyone will thrive in this kind of environment! Also, cafeteria food is not always great. This is why it is cheaper:)

Graph awareness - the graph is no more just a data structure that only computer geek's care about. People are aware of their network(s). The Graph is now a strategy, it provides both power and knowledge. It started with LinkedIn then Facebook and continue with Twitter and Jaiku. It is a way to filter out poor content and a mean for finding great one. Some social graph's phenomena are: crowd sourcing, influence, cliques, and more. One big question is still unanswered: Who owns the graph?

Digital community work - the new social media helps to overcome fear of strangers. In a way it forces you to interact. It is almost impossible to make it alone! Your succeeds is very much depends on your web relationships. What is the optimized investment allocation between writing, SEO tuning, and building a great supportive community? This is where Blog Networks make their case.

Online without offline - it is possible to make it not leaving your computer!? No conferences, no meet-up, no leg work. Also, what should come first or what is more important? The offline or the online activity? It is not clear anymore even if you do both. Offline - You do something and then you go telling to your online friends. Online: You create opportunities to meet friends offline around certain online subjects. There are so many ways to build your Web presence - "I blog there for I'm". Beside blogging there are numerous self marketing, and self branding tool out there. FriendFeed is one example. Sub phenomenon to the online presence is the strive for self scalability - dealing with inbox zero, growing social commitments, knowing the right time allocations between web tasks (research, reporting and community building), avoiding distractions, learning to say NO. The alternative is to work yourself to death.

Other sub-phenomena:

Attention starvation - too many puppies fighting for traffic. This leads to poor comments strategies: the first look something lime "great post..", the second is comment trolling, and the third is building bots for spam comments and splogs. The real dark side is viruses and worms. The gray side is link bait and viral marketing.

Proven scalability patterns - incorporating some or all of the scalability technics like decentralization, virtualization, asynchronous operation mode (push vs. pull), keeping building blocks small, isolation (of responsibilities and resources) are essential for success on a web scale. We did see some examples for product with significant growing pains. We saw some great development in this area too like Ping services, RSS, and recently what the Gnip is now building.

Mashup - companies open their API as a growth strategy. The value for the community: the sum is greater than its parts. Examples: Twhirl, FriendFeed.

There are more web phenomena that I did not cover in relation to social media like the new development in the social media and location aware Mobile web, otheres are obsessive rating, widgets and viral marketing. I'm sure that there are more and this is great news for my Webnomena blog:)

This week I started reading John Battelle's, The Search: How Google and its rivals rewrote the rules of business and transformed our culture. Battelle writes about the evolution of search engines and he walks readers through Google's rapid success.

I'll be perfectly honest, I'm not that interested in this book. I'm not that interested in learning how search works or the nitty gritty details about its evolution and the people involved. It's all a little too technical for me. All I know is, thank God for Google.

What I'm taking away from this book is summarized nicely by L. Gordon Crovitz, the Senior VP of Dow Jones and Co.; president, electronic publishing group. In his praise for the book (which yes, it's found on the back cover) he writes, "The Search makes clear that despite the many losers over the years and the few still-standing winners, the search industry remains at a very early stage of development. Searching is fine, but actually discovering answers will be even better."

Basically, this book highlights that search capabilities are rapidly becoming more sophisticated. And with all the examples of early search failures, many of which looked like they were on their way to success, it's clear that Google's success isn't just luck. If it doesn't want to be replaced by the next bigger and better search engine, Google must constantly distinguish itself. This requires innovation and forward thinking, which requires a successful business model that enables and encourages employees to conceive new ideas. I recently read a Harvard Review Business Journal article about how Google does this (article).

In one of our class discussion posts, my classmate Brian raised an interesting question. He asked if brand loyalty was lacking on the Internet, or if Google was just so superior that it drove users of other search engines to switch to Google. I don't really think many people consider brand loyalty when searching for something on the Internet. So I can see how all the former Yahoo users may have switched to Google without giving it much thought. Not to mention, the word itself, "Google" has become part of our vocabulary. We not only refer to the site itself, but we use it as a verb. This has definitely helped spread its popularity. Anytime I think of looking something up, I inherently think, "I'll Google it." I never think, "I'll Yahoo it." Furthermore, Google is so clever. For example, every day they have something visually new on their homepage, whether it be a cute character or a graphic design intertwined in its lettering.

But there's more to the explanation of why Google is so popular. It's just plain smart. Not only do I really believe the search capability is in fact better, but like I mentioned earlier, the company itself must be doing something right to employ members who obviously have technical expertise, but also good business sense. The bottom line is, all the people mentioned in Battelle's book are much smarter than the average Joe despite if their search engines eventually failed. But Google has continued to grow due to several factors that contribute to any business' success. It's not just that there are really smart people there developing really cool things, but the company is smart in its management of its employees and products.

We all know that “WWW” stands for World Wide Web, which is a kind of prefix before normal domain name. Web created around 1990 in Geneva, Switzerland. But what is WWW1 or WWW2?
You must noticed www1 or www2 once in a while when you are visiting a website. WWW1, WWW2 or even WWW3 is nothing but a mirror of the original web server which is typical WWW. Many websites like government, banks even major search engines like Google(www1.google.com or www2.google.com) and Yahoo(www1.yahoo.com or www2.yahoo.com)! uses www1 and www2. The main purpose of this techniques is to reduce server load. Sometimes the original server need to be updated or modified but major websites like .gov, .edu, google.com, yahoo.com cannot just shut their main server down for hours to update their system. Therefore, they need to use www1 or www2 duplication of their mainframe server.

Sometimes this different servers used for the serving users based on their geographical location. Suppose, if someone type www.google.com form US, they might be taken to the original google server which means www.google.com but if someone type www.google.com from Africa, it might take them to www2.google.com or www1.google.com.

After download the Google Sitemaps Generator, I thought it might easy to install on WordPress mu sys

After download the Google Sitemaps Generator, I thought it might easy to install on Wordpress mu system. But I am wrong, not that simple, I have to change lots of place to make it useful. Here is what I do and why:

First thing first, install:

Install the sitemap generator is same as install any other plugin, unzip and put it into plugin folder, like:

\wp-content\plugins\google-sitemap-generator

I am not put it into mu-plugins folder, because I do not want sitemap.xml for all blogs, I need give blogger choice, they can active it when they need sitemap. (Not everyone like sitemap IMO)

Now, Lets Make Some Change

function GetHomePath()

Find function GetHomePath at sitemap-core.php file, this function return the value of blog root, it works fine for single wordpress system, but for mu system, it will cause mess, as author recommend, we change this function, before return $res;

Global $blog_id;
if ($blog_id != 1) $res .= 'wp-content/blogs.dir/' . $blog_id . '/files/';
return $res;

After change this function, the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz file will be placed at blog file folder.

Remove user ability to make key setting changes

WordPress mu is a multiuser system, you should not allow user to change some key sitemap setting, open sitemap-ui.php file,

This part is for choose sitemap.xml location, same same, if you do not want user change it, better not allow them see it.

Change Default Settings

This is not must, but I recommend you change it, to make your user life easier

On sitemap-core.php file, you can find default value at function InitOptions

The change I made are:

$this->_options["sm_b_prio_provider"]="GoogleSitemapGeneratorPrioByAverageProvider";

The provider for automatic priority calculation, after I test, Google Sitemap Generator Prio By Average Provider is working better than Google Sitemap Generator Prio By Count Provider

$this->_options["sm_b_pingyahoo"]=true; //Auto ping YAHOO

Default the sitemap not ping Yahoo after generated, because you need a yahoo key to ping it, so I put a key (get free form yahoo) as default, I suggest you get one free key from yahoo too and put there, of course if you like you may keep my key, not a big deal.

Done

Ok, it's half done, all the change on the plugin is finished, if user active the plugin at them plugin page, a sitemap.xml and a sitemap.xml.gz (a zip verison) will be create and placed into the blog folder and ping the search engines.

Everything is perfect except: the sitemap.xml NOT at root folder, so when search engine spider come, it can claw nothing except a 404 error. The following is how to fix this:

Plug You Plugin in to mu-plugins

Don't laugh, I know it's a silly title, just some stupid thing have to do.

We know the php file in mu-plugins folder will be load automatically by WordPress. So I created a postedpost.php file and write all my little change and hacks inside, like my Ultimate WP Post Name URL Sanitize Solution, I suggest you do it to, very easy and convenience. Anyway, the following code should inside mu-plugins folder.

Put sitemap into Robots.txt file

Function postedpost_do_robots() {
global $current_blog;
if ( '0' != $current_blog->public ) {
$siteurl = get_settings('siteurl');
if ( class_exists( 'GoogleSitemapGeneratorLoader' ) ) {
echo "Sitemap: " . $siteurl . "/sitemap.xml\n";
}
}
}
add_action('do_robots', 'postedpost_do_robots', 20);

As the new sitemap protocol, you can put sitemap location into robots.txt file, so search engine can find your sitemap without you told them, e.g. These repositories include institutional repositories such as the California Digital Library’s e-Scholarship, as well as discipline-based repositories. The major aim of the project is to develop the worlds largest communication medium for scientific knowledge products which is freely accessible to the public. A key challenge of the project is to support the rapidly growing number of movements and archives who admit the free distribution and access to scientific knowledge. These are the valuable sources for the ScientificCommons.org project. The ScientificCommons.org project makes it possible to access the largely distributed sources with their vast amount of scientific publications via just one common interface. ScientificCommons.org identifies authors from all archives and makes their social and professional relationships transparent and visible to anyone across disciplinary, institutional and technological boundaries. At the time of this posting, ScientificCommons.org included nearly 25 million documents from around 100 different repositories around the world.

Technology Overview
the “perfect search engine,” defined by co-founder Larry Page as som

Technology Overview

the "perfect search engine," defined by co-founder Larry Page as something that, "understands exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you want." To that end, we have persistently pursued innovation and refused to accept the limitations of existing models. As a result, we developed our serving infrastructure and breakthrough PageRank™ technology that changed the way searches are conducted.

From the beginning, our developers recognized that providing the fastest, most accurate results required a new kind of server setup. Whereas most search engines ran off a handful of large servers that often slowed under peak loads, ours employed linked PCs to quickly find each query's answer. The innovation paid off in faster response times, greater scalability and lower costs. It's an idea that others have since copied, while we have continued to refine our back-end technology to make it even more efficient.

The software behind our search technology conducts a series of simultaneous calculations requiring only a fraction of a second. Traditional search engines rely heavily on how often a word appears on a web page. We use more than 200 signals, including our patented PageRank™ algorithm, to examine the entire link structure of the web and determine which pages are most important. We then conduct hypertext-matching analysis to determine which pages are relevant to the specific search being conducted. By combining overall importance and query-specific relevance, we're able to put the most relevant and reliable results first.

PageRank Technology: PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance.

Hypertext-Matching Analysis: Google also analyzes page content. However, instead of simply scanning for page-based text (which can be manipulated by site publishers through meta-tags), our technology analyzes the full content of a page and factors in fonts, subdivisions and the precise location of each word. We also analyze the content of neighboring web pages to ensure the results returned are the most relevant to a user's query.

Google innovations don't stop at the desktop. To give people access to the information they need, whenever and wherever they need it, we continue to develop new mobile applications and services that are more accessible and customizable. And we're partnering with industry-leading carriers and device manufacturers to deliver these innovative services globally. We're working with many of these industry leaders through the Open Handset Alliance to develop Android, the first complete, open, and free mobile platform, which will offer people a less expensive and better mobile experience.

Fun with Stats! I get a bunch of info from WordPress about who is reading my blog, what other sites are linked to my blog, where people clicked through from to arrive at my blog, etc. But the most interesting stats are usually what people entered into a search engine, like Google, that landed them at my blog.

For example, a while back I wrote about scientists finding a new species of rat in the rain forest. Ever since then, lots of people have entered 'rats' into their search engine, and somewhere in the results, there's been a link to my blog, and a lot of people have clicked on that link.

Today, this showed up:

So . . . you're looking for the top secret location of The Phenomenauts' Command Center, are ya?

Well guess who's not gonna tell?

Happy hunting, though. Really.

I get frustrated when searching for Khmer contents on the net and Ihave to put the word “Khmer

I get frustrated when searching for Khmer contents on the net and Ihave to put the word "Khmer" or "Cambodia" in my search term and most of the time it doesn't give the desired result.

So I decided to create my own search engine bases on Google Custom Search feature. It works out great. Say example you want to search for a hotel, just type "hotel" and it will give you the results of hotels in Cambodia.

Check it out http://mohema.com
