Welcome to the Get Together from 65:

How are you? I hope you didn't make the mistake like I did of rooting for the Yankees when you got into sports the way I did. Since 1967 it has been more lows than highs. This year is bad enough not making the post season but how about the manager motivating the players for some pride? Losing 2 out of 3 to Seattle is a disgrace. Let's hope next year we see a lot of changes.

The rock and roll is always full of cheer. How about the first song Marty Balin, Signe Anderson, Bob Harvey, and Jerry Peloquin performed on August 24, 2008 8/24/08 in Astoria, Oregon. As they played together for the first time since 1965 on the same stage it is fitting they opened with:

Let's Get Together

It was a tremendous feeling as a friend of Signe's that she was able to get ground clearance to perform. This past week she started the latest round of medical tests. Please continue to send me your get well wishes for her. I always forward all the airmails! Thanks.

Thank you to Barry Flast for being able to do so much behind the scenes for the reunion and the great rick Martin for his on the spot reports! Good luck to good friend the superlative Don Aters as he heads west!

That is it for this time around. I'll go back to the Rock Tent Vault and see what tomorrow will bring. May the week be amazing for you and family.

Congratulations to Christchurch band Beneath The Silence for taking out this year’s Rockquest

Congratulations to Christchurch band Beneath The Silence for taking out this year's Rockquest Final on the weekend! Great job, here's to a big future and may you go forth and represent Nicechurch and New Zealand around the world.

Massive show today - kicking off the week in style we had Banks Peninsula Labour MP; Ruth Dyson in for a chat about school zoning, we flogged the Winston issue just a little more and touched on New Zealand's binge drinking culture. Have a listen:

Ruth Dyson - Labour MP Interview

Russel Brown, probably one of only a very select few humans who know most things gave us his take on Winston (we're almost over that whole thing now), Purples Spheres and the latest in the lead up to the USA elections. He's a good aural treat!

Russel Brown - current affairds commentator Interview

You know that guy Noel Gallagher from that band Oasis? Well we know someone who interviewed him - none other than Grant Smithies! So we had a belated chat with the man to find out what this mega star is really like. As it turns out he was pretty sweet! But maybe Grant scored him on a 'good day' who knows, who cares, check out the interview:

Grant Smithies Music Review

And lastly on today's action packed show we had music managing guru Peter Jenner in the studio to tell us why the hell he's in out fair city of Christchurch. Peter has managed bands like Pink Floyd, The Clash and is currently working with Billy Bragg and he is speaking the MMF Tune Up which is happening tonight at the Dux, so get along to hear him offer more pearls of wisdom. But for now check out Spanky racking his brain:

Peter Jenner Interview

No less impressive is tomorrow's show! We've got a new feature we're trying out with a medical herbalist called Sam McSorley. You can call the studio to tell her your ailments and she will deliver a herbal remedy right on the spot! Also we'll have Dai Henwood on air with his quirky angle on shit and that young stallion of a man Andrew Todd will be in with his Rialto Film pick o the week.

See you then!

For some years I've been a great fan of MP3 players. Having literally a pocket full of music you have chosen that you can take anywhere is just a wonderfull freedom, especially on crowded bus. Listening to podcasts was something I did while at home through iTunes. The limited menu functions and displays on MP3 players made hearing podcasts this way a bit difficult.

Last spring I bought my first offical iPod, my 8GB iPod Touch. It's great, and more often then not, if I don't have it when I'm out I feel a bit lost. Along with 800+ songs, I started putting some of my favorite podcasts on it.

A few of my favorites are, in no order, are:

Geekbrief video podcast

All in The Mind

Skeptoid

Real Time with Bill Maher (Audio)

The Skeptics Guide to the Universe

The two things that these casts have in common are, not just information, but knowledge and wit. It's nice to know this old brain of mine still thirsts...

How many of you still tune in to your once-favorite DJs at a local radio station? Not many, I suppose, what with the advent of MP3s as well as podcasts and Internet radio. I must say that with speeds of Internet connectivity getting faster and faster all the time, Internet radio is starting to look all the more attractive to just about any and every layer of society, so one might as well keep up with the times by jumping onto the Internet radio bandwagon.
What is the best MP3player for listening to a radiodrama?

What a blessing it is, those portable MP3 players - you can use them to listen to music, but to radi

What a blessing it is, those portable MP3 players - you can use them to listen to music, but to radiodrama in MP3 format as well. Such a player does not have to be very expensive, even the cheap players that you can buy at big stores such as Wallmart do the job. But if you are going to buy a player, and want to use it to listen to radiodrama, you should keep following requirements in mind - they make it much easier to listen to a radiodrama.

1. A must: a screen
Miniplayers such as the iPod Shuffle or other players without a screen are really not practical: you can't see what you are listening to, you can't choose the chapters (unless you make a playlist on your own computer with the plays in the right order).

2. Preferable: folders
It is preferable to choose an MP3 player which works with folders. That way you can arrange the different chapters of a play in one folder, and listen to them in the right sequence. Remark: some players allow you to make folders on the player and to arrange the chapters in these folders during transfer of the files, but you cannot view the folders on the screen or choose a certain folder.

3. A workaround: playing with properties
Does your MP3 player not support folders? Then there is a way to make sure the chapters get played in the right order. You just need to play a bit with the "properties" of a file. To start, you make sure the "genre" of all plays is "radiodrama". That way you can select all radiodrama files on your player. To do this, you have to open Windows Explorer, select the file, and right click on the file (you can select several files at once). Choose Properties. Under Windows Vista you will find a Tab titled "details". Here you can change all details of an MP3 file, such as name, album, genre, etc.

Because most players support selecting by genre, this allows you to make a first selection and separate plain music from radiodrama. Furthermore, if you edit the filenames meticulously, they will appear in the right order on your screen. For example: for the Agatha Christie series "Lord Edgeware Dies", you could name the files "Agatha_edgeware_1.mp3", "Agatha_edgeware_2.mp3" etc. Yu can change the name of a file by right clicking on it, and choose "rename".

4. A must: remember your position
When listening to a radiodrama of an hour long, you sometimes have to interrupt - unexpected visitors, children needing your attention, etc. In that case it is imperative that your MP3 player remembers where you were. Some do, and when you restart such a player, it will continue at exact the same location as where you had stopped. Other players don't, and you have to start allover, and have to listen to the radiodrama from the beginning. But even when your player remembers where you were when you stopped the player, most of these players require that you resume listening to the play. If you don't, and listen to other music instead, the temporary bookmark is lost.

5. Preferable: bookmarks
When buying a new player, we advise you to look for a player with support for bookmarks. With a bookmark you can mark a point in the MP3 file, which later can be found by the player, so that the radiodrama can be resumed at that point, whether you listen to other files in the meantime or not. Players who support bookmarks are, amongst others, Creative Zen Micro, Archos. A list of such players can be found in this article.

6. Not suitable: synchronization through proprietary software only
Listening to radiodrama is very different form normal music. When playing music on a portable MP3 player, you will listen often to the same song, but a radiodrama you probably listen to just once, and maybe in a year or two, you might want to listen to it again. So what is very easy for music (automatic synchronization between computer and player) is not ideal for transferring radiodrama to your player. Unfortunately several MP3 players only support synchronization through a proprietary music manager. Try to avoid this - it is better to go for a player where you can transfer files with copy and paste.

Unfortunately, most salespersons in an appliance store don't know the details and specifications of all the players they sell in the shop. We advise you to look at the models they sell, jot type number and price down, and start up your computer when you get home, to look at the specifications. Consult the manual of the MP3 player when in doubt. It is not the most easy way to make a choice, but it is the only way, at least if you want to have the player that is the most suitable for you.

That is why we ask your cooperation: could you please leave a comment on this blog, mentioning the player you use, whether it complies with above requirements, its good and bad points, and of course the price. Thank you!

Our choice? The Archos 104 (now sold out): it has a screen, bookmarks, folders, transfer by copy and paste. The quality of the sound is ok, and there is an equalizer to adapt the sound.

Yes, that's right. For once all three of us had a free weekend.

Did we spend it getting high on mind-expanding drugs, enjoying kinky and athletic sex with the most beautiful people on the planet and getting blasted afterwards on the most expensive whisky money can buy?

No. We watched The Chase.

And The Space Museum. And The Time Meddler. And two episodes of Survivors.

Then we recorded all the shows attached to those episodes, two adverts, a lifetimes worth of intro's and had an impromptu photoshoot (some of which can be found here and some more on the Facebook page) that should keep you awake at night for many years to come.

Fuck me, we know how to live.

The studio window commands an excellent view across long, tidy gardens and into the living room wind

The studio window commands an excellent view across long, tidy gardens and into the living room window of the house opposite, where every time I have the opportunity to look out, the wife of the home is perpetually ironing. Upstairs, her husband is in the bathroom, frowning intently at something. Behind the block of flats that backs onto the Producer's garden, a man parks one of those cars, really popular in the late seventies and early eighties and look like they were based on a design formed of several cardboard boxes glued together, painted, and wheels attached. The driver is a large, unexpected sort of man, with the shape, build and mannerisms of Ross Kemp if you extracted the TV glamour. The woman in the house is still resolutely ironing.

I am alone in the studio with only a microphone and my laptop for company. Usually, the Producer is there for company, but owing to an incident involving a mysteriously absent chicken shaslik, and the lurking presence of some unidentifiable other, I am by myself, reading chapters from Book One to myself and the microphone.

My mind strays inexorably to the film Sixth Sense, and as I have done all my life, I wonder about what happens if you leave a microphone alone in a room, to record the silence. It's one of those great tests of reality; according to Schrodinger, I guess putting a microphone in a room is like opening the box with the cat in it and finding out whether or not it's dead. But I have always wondered whether I'd hear whispers, the silence or some more exciting thing. Now I feel as though I am the whispers, talking my way through a chapter that, were it darker than it is, I'd not want to read alone anywhere, microphone or not.

Talking for hours every night to a microphone is harder work than it sounds. Over the days I sound increasingly like a forty-a-day smoker and feel increasingly haggard. I need a voice that does voices, not just intonations, and I'm never happy with the way Arandes sounds. However, we have fourteen chapters complete now, and I have a break for two weeks in which to recuperate, before we begin recording again and the main series goes live.

This article first appeared in The W Weekly in Lexington, KY in 2005.
To hear Jonathan and Seth disc

This article first appeared in The W Weekly in Lexington, KY in 2005.

To hear Jonathan and Seth discuss their podcast, Uhh Yeah Dude, using phrases like “we take it dead serious,” is quite puzzling at first, considering its subject matter covers fake celebrity gay rumors and an obsession with Dateline NBC’s "To Catch A Predator.” However, after hearing the first few minutes of their show, their passion for podcasting becomes abundantly clear. Currently only twenty episodes in, the hosts of Uhh Yeah Dude are already masters of their craft.

The initial idea for the show came from Jonathan’s desire to recreate the conversations he’s had with Seth after they meet at a video store six years ago. A musician for television and film soundtracks, Jon covers the technical aspects of the show such as recording and answering email. On the air, he provides frequent bouts of uncontrollable laughter and trademark sayings such as “so awesome” and “whatevs.”

The second half of U.Y.D. is Seth. Combining the timbre of Dana Carvey with the methodic grandeur of James Lipton, Seth is a virtual encyclopedia of pop culture, television, and film. With a collection of over 15 hours of self-made VHS compilations of his favorite television moments, accompanied by 16 pages of handwritten menus for each tape, Seth is more than “a little O.C.D."

Before introducing themselves to the world, the two “obsessed for quite sometime” on the concept of the podcast, and it shows. What they ended up with was an intimate hour of comedy without any of the downtime typically associated with amateur podcasts. Rather than share esoteric stories from their personal lives, Uhh Yeah Dude chooses to cover topics relevant to everyone. Jonathan explains that “this is not a selfish endeavor” and that listeners will never hear them “talk about a Thanksgiving they had in 1987.”

The majority of Uhh Yeah Dude’s content is a seemingly endless list of recurring segments. While this may seem like a tedious practice at first glance, the duo approaches the show with such vitality that there is never a dull moment. Fixtures of the show include This Week In Florida, the Country and Hip-Hop songs of the week, and In/Out, where they track recent trends in fashion, food, and entertainment. A Hollywood native, Jonathan describes this as their way of “filtering what we’re inundated with on a daily basis.”

The Uhh Yeah Dude crew has been releasing new episodes every week for the past five months and shows no signs of letting up any time soon. Say Seth, ‘we will continue to do the show until we’re old and dead.” You can find Uhh Yeah Dude in the iTunes music store and online at Myspace.com/uhhyeahdude. You can also call their voicemail line at 888-842-2357 and email them at uhhyeahdude@gmail.com.

Must-Know Uhh Yeah Dude Disorders:
It seems that every episode finds Seth struggling to overcome a new disorder. Here is a comprehensive list of our favorites.

Ringxiety: The obsession of wanting to be contacted through cell phones.

Tanorexia: Being addicted to faux tanning solutions. Patients who suffer will often first do a vertical spray tan and then bake the spray into their skin by using tanning beds.

Adult Onset Adolescence: When a grown man experiences child like behaviors. Symptoms include building tree houses and wearing denim shorts.

AC/DC: All Consuming Disorder Condition: The accumulation of a myriad of disorders affecting a person all at once.

Recently my power cord for my laptop decided to die a painful death, thus rendering my laptop useless

Recently my power cord for my laptop decided to die a painful death, thus rendering my laptop useless, thus causing my ability to download, transfer to my ipod and listen to podcasts to disappear completely. SO, I've had to fall back on my trusty Blackberry Pearl 8120 which comes equipped with wifi and a media player. I imported all my podcasts to bloglines and have downloaded podcasts piecemeal directly to my phone and listened to them as I went along.

Its been freeing.

I downloaded podcasts at a coffee house. And at work. And on the street. And pretty much anywhere there was an open wifi connection. The only thing that kind of sucked was having to do it manually. It was ok for a temporary fix but if I had to do it all the time, it'd piss me off and I"d probably only listen to a few podcasts instead of 40 of 'em. And of course the autodownloading and updating is kind of what makes podcasts so useful.

Which brings me to muse on this question: why the crap do the current crop of mp3 players (Zune 2, Ipod Touch, Iphone) which comes equipped with wifi still require you to download podcasts to your PC and then transfer them to your device?

This oversight is even more egregious for Apple's devices because they already friggin' include a mobile friggin' version of friggin' Itunes.

There is something incredibly frustrating about knowing your hardware can do something you want to it to do but have been deliberately crippled by the software. Screw 'em both.

The majority of my pregnancy has not been about sharing too much. This is my first pregnancy so obvi

The majority of my pregnancy has not been about sharing too much. This is my first pregnancy so obviously everything was new to me. I felt a strong need to stay inside a bit more. I allowed my yoga podcast to take a bit of a back seat as my body, my heart, my mind slowly morphed into motherhood preparation :)

I think God did some great thinking having us HAVE to allow the baby to grow for 9 MONTHS!!! It's the beginning of patience I tell you. I cannot tell you how many times I just wanted her out! Not out of discomfort or pregnancy aches and pains, but simply because I just wanted to hold her already!!! Big lesson for me, big lesson.

I've gotten to a point where my pregnancy is a bigger part of my body. I had been blessed by having a pretty seamless pregnancy. She grew slowly. I haven't really gained that much weight. There have been changes, but as they happen so very slowly, I was able to align with the shifts and make choices that would support my weight gain. It's now, at the 8th month that I 'feel' absolutely PREGNANT :D I have to move slower, mind my steps, move around a lot more as being in one position for too long does not feel good, and I am getting all sort of achies and shifties all throughout my hips and belly. I particularly dislike getting in and out of cars. Oh lordy if the cars are short cars...Tough I tell you.

So, I share with you now, my prenatal yoga practice. I speak with you as if you were with me, telling you the why of what I do. It all happens organically. I did not plan on a specific practice. I just followed my own instincts, focusing on my baby girl and what feels good in my body. I am not in any way saying that all pregnant women should feel good doing what I do, or that THIS is the way to practice. I'm sharing to have you be with me and perhaps share some of my insights with you that I have learned :) I would love to start a conversation, both with pregnant yoginis, wanna be pregnant yoginis, or just plain 'ol yoginis that want to deepen their understanding of their female body (possibly even having gone through this already)

Director of Athletic Media & Public Relations Rich Moser said new media, such as weblogs, video,

Director of Athletic Media & Public Relations Rich Moser said new media, such as weblogs, video, and podcasts, is becoming the big thing for Sports Information departments to have.

He sees the new media being a double edge sword, though.

“It’s great to put the information out there, but the downside is it has to be updated regularly,” Moser said.

Another downside Moser said to watch out for is the notify coaches before taping for a podcast, so that they can monitor what they say to keep profanity off the record.

Moser, who is in his third year at Eastern Illinois University, came to speak to the sports writing class on Sept. 3 about the role of the sports information department.

Before coming to work at Eastern, Moser worked for 12 years at Gonzaga, including working with Adam Morrison. During his time with Morrison, Moser had to implement a conference call system to limit interview times.

Among the duties he does at Eastern, Moser oversees the sports information department and sends information to the media, along with holding press conferences.

The two big sports media always wants, he said, are football and basketball. After every game, Moser will get the coach and a few of the top players from the game for media interviews.

One thing he always tells the coaches and players are to talk to the media whether they win or lose, otherwise the media may not care when they win.

While the department covers all sports on campus, the small sports are not covered the same amount as football or basketball.

The other thing that Moser does is to hire interns to help work in the department. These interns normally help keep track of stats during games and write press releases. He has these interns not only to split the workload more, but to give students work experience.

“It (journalism) is a big business, but it’s a business where you have to know someone to get in,” Moser said.

I’ve been listening to podcasts for about 18 months now. It started with just the one. Then, b

I've been listening to podcasts for about 18 months now. It started with just the one. Then, before I knew it, there was another, and another. Currently there are 6 I listen to on a regular basis, with a few more that I dip into. However, these are all entertainment ones - given that it's me that we're talking about, the usual content is robots/spaceships/wizards/zombies/mysterious tropical islands with polar bears on; they're generally not concerned with libraries. So I was interested to see what this week's activities would be about. I've had a listen to the library podcast that we offer, and the new one that's in progress, and they're pretty good. I think that they're a useful thing for us to be providing; when you think that most students will probably have an mp3 player, offering them content in this way has to be a good thing.

I've got a bloglines account, so I've been using that to keep track of podcasts. It's getting to be a bit of a pain downloading them though, so I thought trying a podcatcher might be a good thing to do. I downloaded iTunes, and more or less disliked it on sight. I mean, it's pretty and everything, but I don't really listen to music much, so I don't really need links to the the iTunes store. I don't have an iPod, so I can't sync my mp3 player with iTunes. There's nowhere to import feeds to. And when it finally does subscribe you to the feeds that you want, it puts them in a set of folders which are fine if you're using the whole thing and want to keep tv shows, movies, podcasts and music separate, but are less than helpful if you want to just do podcasts. So I gave up and looked for something else! I ended up with Juice, which is a lot simpler and lets me specify the folder I want to use. My mp3 player is essentially a flash drive, so I can set it up to download to there and I'm sorted. Much better. (Note: I don't think Juice is being updated any more, but for the moment it does what I want how I want, so I'm happy. Feel free to suggest something else for me to use!)

To try and avoid making this the longest blog post in history, I've added a video to a separate post, which is really easy! I can see how youtube, and videos in general, could be a really useful resource for us. We could, for example, make a video tour of the library. Not only would this be useful for new students who can't make it to a library induction, it would also help us show off the new ground floor to returning students and staff.

The session yesterday with John Conway was very informative. I hadn't realised that so much could be done with such ease. There are definite applications here for us. We could put little bits into Olivia about searching the catalogue, or databases - it's much easier to get an understanding of what's going on when you actually see it happening. We could maybe put some of the training sessions that we do up online somewhere too, and that might reach students who don't want to come to library sessions, but still might need a bit of help.
