Wow, ok, I’m a little nauseated and bit weak and dizzy but really I’m doing pretty good

Wow, ok, I'm a little nauseated and bit weak and dizzy but really I'm doing pretty good for how sick my doctor told me I was actually going to be. (Yay God!) I took a Phenegran this morning with all my other pills. I don't believe I'm strong enough to do my physical therapy in the pool today.

So what do I have to do today? I have to visit my MySpace friends. I think this is very important as I have not done it in so long and I have added many friends since then. I have a handful of bands who have asked to be friends with me and when I post comments, I really like to make sure I at least listen to one of their songs. :-) For the non-band friends and family, I like to look over their space to read about them, find out what's new with them, etc.

I have to visit my online classroom today. I'm looking forward to this class as I will become more knowledgeable and skilled in using Windows XP, MS Office 2007, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. I do so love working on the computer and learning new things. I'm like a thirsty sponge just wanting to soak it all in. :-)

Update about my sister: I spoke with her last night as I normally do. We started discussing the senate passing the Bail Out bill. I mentioned to her that it might just be a coincidence, BUT, that I believe when I suffer financial hardship (as I am), everyone will suffer as well. Well, that sent my sister off the edge and we had to cut our conversation short. Maybe I am playing with one card short of a full deck, but I can not deny the truth.

Thank you everyone for your prayers for me. Please feel free to comment as I love to hear from people. :-)

God bless, Peace and love, Out, Linda

[caption id="attachment_114" align="aligncenter" width="347" caption="влияние цены акций на индекс РТС "][/caption]

of all, let me say that my school provides me with a computer and nearly any software I would like

of all, let me say that my school provides me with a computer and nearly any software I would like on it. MS Office is considered standard, and 2007 is rapidly being added to nearly all the computers on campus. A couple years ago, when I had my older Tablet PC (the Lenovo X41), my hard drive was filling up. A 30GB drive was filling up rapidly with all the software apps I was installing, music and video files I had, and the growing number of documents I was managing.

As an aside it blows my mind that a 30GB drive filled up so fast! It seems like not long ago a 1GB hard drive was more than adequate!

Anyway, as my drive filled up I was trying to find ways of reducing the number of bloated programs I was using. Turns out MS Office XP was one of them. This was when I was first on my open source kick so I tried out Open Office (OO). I was very impressed and found it an easy switch to make. I liked the commenting in Word better than OO word-processing, but other than that I felt it was an easy switch. So I de-installed MS Office from my computer and went completely to OO. I tried to get others on campus, including the IT department, to look at it. What a cost savings for the school if we switched to OO. As with everything else I do, it seems that the school was not ready to embrace that so they continued on their Word trek and I went my way. What the heck, OO could convert documents to and from the .doc (and .xls or .ppt) whenever I needed so what was the big deal?

I continued on my merry way until last spring when I started running into people using Office 2007 and the .docx format. It got very frustrating, mostly because a majority of the people using it had no idea what they were doing or how to save their documents in a format others (including those with older versions of MS Office) could read. By this point I had my new computer with a 105GB hard drive. I had done such a good job of maintaining a lower memory footprint that I easily, at the time, had over 60GB of space available on there. So I took the plunge and had IT install MS Office 2007. I pretty much ignored except to open the occasional .docx document it until a couple weeks ago when I started collaborating with a teacher who only had it installed. To make our work easier I agree to start using Word 2007.

I tend to jump in with both feet when I do something new. Like when I decided to type up my problems for my Calculus BC class I decided to use LaTeX even though I had never really worked with it before. I am not an expert now, but much better at it. Or the time a couple years ago when I read about the Dvorak layout keyboard and decided to try it. I switched all the keys on my laptop (which is my primary and only computer I use regularly) and went about training myself on the new layout. A year and a half later I continue to use it and type at least as fast, perhaps a bit faster than I used to with QWERTY.

Anyway, the point is that I started using MS Office 2007 for all my documents to get a feel for it. I still love the commenting, and the 'ribbons' at the top of the page have really grown on me. But the coolest thing I ran into about 5 minutes before writing this blog. When you open a new Word document you can choose to create a blog entry, and it will even connect to your blog and upload it for you. So I have the complete power of Word able to work directly on my blog. I am typing this in Word now. It allows me to add graphics like those below easily.

Or, as in the first word of the entry I can use to make a point.

I have been happy using Open Office, and I still recommend it, particularly if you are on a budget – either financially or in terms of computer memory. It definitely does almost anything that a standard user of an office suite would need – and it does it well. But I really like Office 2007.

Since I have talked about using my Tablet PC often while teaching I thought I would have a post list

Since I have talked about using my Tablet PC often while teaching I thought I would have a post listing all the programs that I have installed - well, many of them at least - as well as some thoughts about each. In addition, if you feel so moved, I have made each of the names links to the relevant sites. Many of the software I list is free, others are not.

AutoGraph 3.2 - Beautiful graphing software, particularly for 3D. In fact, while I love WinPlot, it cannot compare to the 3D graphs in AutoGraph. Another nice bit here is that, for a Tablet PC, you can actually use an ink marking pen right on the graphs. If all things were equal between WinPlot and AutoGraph I would be very tempted to make this my primary graphing program, but the fact that you have to pay for AutoGraph (not much, but more than I want my students to have to pay at home) makes me choose WinPlot. As a demonstration tool, it is worth the price.

Calques 3D v2.4.1 - Another dynamic geometry software program. I have a number of different programs of this type and this is the one I use the least. In fact, I cannot remember the last time I even clicked it open. Hmmm... maybe it is time to get rid of it?

CamStudio - I have not used this a lot, but it is free software that allows me to make videos of things that I am doing on my computer. I plan on making some tutorials on how to use certain pieces of software for my students.

ClassPad Manager v3 Basic - I got this emulator software for the CASIO ClassPad 330 when I took their online class this summer. Great piece of software and ever better calculator. However, because I chose the Nspires for my class I probably will not use this very often.

Cropper - Nifty little tool for taking snapshots of your screen for use elsewhere. My choice when creating .png graphics files for LaTeX documents.

CutePDF - This is essentially a print server that allows you to direct documents to be printed as .pdf files right on your computer. While OpenOffice and MS Office 2007 have this functionality built in, many programs do not, and this becames a very helpful program to have. Did I mention it is free?

Evernote - I am just starting to use this program. it looks fascinating, and I have started saving things to it, but I am not sure how much I will use it yet.

GeoGebra - Like WinPlot above, run, don't walk, to download this software. It is free, and it is really a great piece of dynamic geometry software. It works on all three major platforms and its interface is fairly intuitive. Even moreso than SketchPad. The dropdown menus include pictures as well as descriptions making it very easy to find what you want. The ease of integration with coordinate graphing makes this a must-have. There is even a way to use this without installing it on your computer!

Geometer's Sketchpad - A staple for any geometry teacher. Yes, you have to pay for it, but it is still very flexible and holds its own against the other programs, and there are far more teacher and student resources out there for this software than anything else.

Geometry Expressions - Great dynamic geometry software with two huge advantages over everything else out there in this category. It can evaluate symbolically as well as draw diagrams with restrictions easily. It is not free, but for anyone teaching Geometry I think it is worth the cost.

Google Sketch-Up - I have not used this very much, but when I need to make and demonstrate things about 3D shapes this is a beautiful piece of software. And it is free.

Mathematica 6 - An amazing and versatile CAS software. Way beyond what I need, but worth it to explore. The Demonstraction project is really neat, and I have played around making some simple ones with my Mathemacia. Definitely a steep learning curve and not a program I would recommend to a novice or someone easily frustrated.

Maxima - This is an open-source and free CAS environment. It is software like Maple or Mathematica, but not nearly as polished. I have used this with my students in the past when I wanted them to have CAS, but did not want them to pay an arm and a leg.

Microsoft Math 3.0 - Very cheap to pick up if you are a teacher. Very similar to many of the graphing calculator emulator programs that are out there. It has CAS functionality, and one thing I really like was the ability to see the steps used to symbolically solve an equation rather than always jumping right to the answer. Neat little program.

Microsoft Office 2007 - Yes, I do have this for two main reasons. It is becoming the standard at my school, and as more people use the .docx format it is easier to open it with this. Additionally, I have to admit I like its commenting and revision formatting.

Microsoft OneNote - If you have a Tablet PC than you have to have this program. I use this in class everyday to write my notes for my students. I can then export as .html files or .pdf files and put them in our school network to be accessed by the students.

MiKTeX 2.7 - I was a latecomer to LaTeX, but once I started to use it I really liked it. I know write all my tests in LaTeX, as well as the entire book of problems that I hand out to my Calculus BC students. There are many distributions of LaTeX, but this one makes it very easy to install. I will warn you though that LaTeX formatting is not WYSIWYG. There is a steep learning curve here, but, in my humble opinion, worth the effort.

Mimio software - Instead of a SmartBoard - which does not interface well with the Tablet PC I found - I use the Mimio hardware and software. This is a device which attaches to a regular whiteboard and performs in a similar manner to a SmartBoard. It is also a lot cheaper.

Mozilla Firefox - My browser of choice.

Open Office 2.4 - This is my default office program. I actually first moved to this while my school was still using MS Office 2003, and this program was far less bloated and did everything nearly as well or better than MS Office did, except for the commenting. My tablet at the time had a 30 GB hard drive which I had rapidly filled up, so dumping MS Office in favor of Open Office was eminently practical. Once a new version of OO has .docx (and related extensions) support I will probably go back to this full time.

Peanut Software - Actually, this is two different programs: WinPlot and WinGeom. There are other programs at the site, but these are the two I use. They were written by a math teacher at Phillips Exeter Academy. All of his software is free, although it is not open-source. WinPlot is an absolutely amazing graphing program. If you have the capability of running Windows software (sorry, it does not come in any other flavor) and you teach math, then you should not be without this program. Really. I mean it. What are you still looking at this page for? WinPlot graphs 2 and 3D, and will do anything you ask of it up through calculus. The best part is that if you do not see something you think should be in there, or a bug pops up, email the designer and there will be fixes and changes within months, if not weeks. WinGeom is a decent dynamic geometry program, but to be honest nowhere near as good as SketchPad or GeoGebra. When SketchPad was the only option then this was a pretty decent alternative. With GeoGebra on the scene this is less relevant.

SMART Ideas 5 - Very cool concept mapping software. Made by the same people that make the SmartBoard, but you do not have to have a SmartBoard to use it.

Snipping Tool - Same thing as Cropper, but created by Microsoft. If you want to take a snapshot of a whole window, or even the whole desktop this is better. In addition, you can take a snapshot and then ink on it before saving it.

TI-Nspire CAS Teacher Edition - I just got this version the other day. Nice, particularly if you are using the calculator in class.

TI-SmartView - Great emulator software for the TI-84. If this is what your students are using, this is a great demonstration tool.

ToDoList - Great little task program.

I have other software on my computer, but these are the ones I turn to most often when teaching. A question that remains is how I use all these pieces of software, but since this is already a long post I will save that for another day. I would love to hear from others if there are other pieces of software out there.

Before I start my regular planned game reviews, I thought I'd share a little information regarding Microsoft Word 2007. See, whenever I try and start the program or open an existing word document, I get the Word start-up graphic and then it just sits there and hangs. I either have to use Task Manager to manually terminate the application or double click said graphic until Vista gives me the option to Close the program or Close and find a solution on the web.

Now if any of you have had this problem, apparently there are a few workarounds (hate that word) which can be found here. I, for one, didn't get a complete answer from this page even though I went through each proposed solution. I did however come up with a workaround (eek!) for myself which I worked out from one of the solutions on the Microsoft support page.

In short I found out the issue was that the default Word template that the application uses when starting up was corrupted. So as one of the suggestions on the Microsoft support page said, you can rename this template file and all your worries should be gone. True. Kind of. After I renamed mine, MS Word did start up without a hitch but upon closing the application and restarting it, I found out that Word simple recreates the default template which of course means application-crashing time again!

So I know you are bored by now and just want me to get to the workaround (faint!). So here it be.

@echo off
cls
echo.
echo.
echo.
del C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm
echo deleted corrupted Word template
echo.
echo Now starting MS Word 2007...
pause
start C:\Progra~1\Micros~1\Office12\winword.exe

Simply create a new text document and paste in the "code" above. Make sure you replace the YOURUSERNAME part with your Windows login name.

Save the file as anythingyouwant.BAT to create a batch file.

Run the batch file whenever you want to start MS Word 2007 and you should be all set.

What the "Mojave Experiment" teaches us

Recently, Microsoft has rolled out a new advertising campaign for its Windows Vista operating system

Recently, Microsoft has rolled out a new advertising campaign for its Windows Vista operating system, dubbed the Mojave Experiment. The idea behind the campaign was to see whether regular, everyday users who stated their extreme dislike of Vista, but who never actually used Vista themselves, would, in fact, find Vista appealing once they got their hands on it. To do this, Microsoft sat down a number of people and showed them its latest operating system, "Mojave". In the videos, the people rave about the new OS and how simple and elegant it is. Afterward, Microsoft reveals that they were actually using Vista and many of the people act amazed and go on to say they'll be purchasing Vista right away. If you actually go to the Mojave Experiment website and watch some of the videos, you will discover that the way Microsoft approached this campaign certainly leaves some things to be desired (discussed in the latest episode of TWiT, episode 154), however, the campaign in and of itself raises some important issues and can teach us a valuable lesson.

Now, I myself own Windows Vista Ultimate and, personally, have had no problems with it. I respect those who, for whatever reason, feel Windows Vista is not right for them. However, what I find disconcerting is how prevalent the negative feelings towards Vista have become. I teach computer classes to senior citizens, covering everything from email, to Microsoft Word, to Google. Recently, I was consulting a woman about what type of computer she should purchase. The first thing she asked me was, "Should I be worried about Vista?" Now, this is not someone who is a heavy computer user. This is just your "average", everyday person who likes to email family and friends, go on the Internet and type letters on her computer.

What I have seen time and time again is that people are confused about Vista, even though they have never even touched the OS themselves. They talk about how horrible Vista is, about how many problems it has, but they have never actually used it. Ironically, the woman in my class went ahead and purchased a computer with Vista and later told me that she actually likes it.

I'm not suggesting Vista is perfect. I'm not suggesting Vista is right for everyone. However, what is saddening is that consumers are forming such negative opinions about a product without actually seeing the product for themselves. Furthermore, if you look at the reviews for Vista, they're not that bad. In fact, many reviewers, such as CNET, say for users who are looking to buy a new computer, Vista is just fine. So why is their such intense animosity towards Vista if the reviews are generally favorable, and many of the driver and software compatibility issues have been addressed? Unfortunately, this hints at a much larger, indeed, societal problem. Word of mouth can be more powerful than even the most expensive, well-organized advertising campaign, and it certainly hasn't helped that Microsoft has kept mum about the negative Vista press for this long. A good example of this word of mouth phenomenon is the movie industry. It is not uncommon for movies that receive very negative reviews to do extremely well and vice versa. The same has gone for Vista. Although it is a solid operating system, albeit with some problems, but nevertheless an OS that should satisfy the needs of most average users, it has been struck with negative publicity and word of mouth. While many people haven't tried Vista for themselves, they may have heard from a friend of a friend that Vista has problems, and therefore, have tried to avoid it.

Another woman in one of my classes has Vista, as well as Microsoft Office 2007. Since Office 2007 is so radically different from previous versions, she has had trouble figuring out how to do specific tasks. She also thinks that the problem is Vista, even though it there really isn't a problem, it's just that Office 2007 takes some getting used to.

It all comes back to misconceptions. We need to learn not to judge a book by its cover, or in this case, an operating system by its name. Sure, for some people, Vista has proven to be problematic. There are certainly people who have valid qualms with Microsoft's most recent OS. However, for a large majority of users, for those who want to be able to email grandchildren, to look at digital photos, to browse the Internet, Vista is not only a satisfactory OS, it is actually much better than XP, especially when it comes to managing digital photos.

Ultimately, the blame comes back to Microsoft. It had all the time in the world to reverse the public opinion of Vista and it was its decision to wait until now. Nevertheless, it's important that we be informed consumers and don't take everything at face value. Read reviews, go to the store and try it out for yourself. While Vista (or any other piece of software or technology) may not be right for you, you won't know until you experience it for yourself.

I've just realized that usually...

I type webmail.ntu.edu.sg in my browser's address box almost every x-hours, where x in Z+ and 0 < x < 24, followed by clicking the link given;

I open my homepage and click Webmail;

I type stuff\blablabla and my password to check my NTU e-mail;

I am afraid of Microsoft stuff;

I see broken incorrect layout of NTU Mail as I use a non-IE browser;

when I use Internet Explorer, I must wait for about:blank for a century.

Boring, you see. Now I don't want to open that website frequently at least in my laptop, even though at last I should be brave to use Microsoft stuff. The only way to check the e-mail without abusing web browser and typing that thingy is by abusing Microsoft Office Outlook.

The version of Outlook that I have is the 2007. The guide from NTU CITS does not seem to be straightly applicable to Outlook 2007 version, but it actually works anyway if you try for the whole night hahaha. [I hope CITS will update the guide soon.]

So, I try to explain the guide in terms of Outlook 2007 [ and Windows Vista; because I use Windows Vista :P ].

Open the Control Panel and switch to Classic View.

Errr sorry. That wasn't the last.
Launch the Outlook 2007. You should see a familiar pop-up prompting for your password.

[caption id="attachment_472" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Login Prompt"][/caption]

Download do arquivo (2 opções): Opção1 e Opção2

Prontinho!

I had a client with a brand new Lenovo t61 call me complaining that Excel would crash when he would, get this, apply "bold" formatting to a cell in Excel.

It would also crash when he wrote an email in Outlook or tried to edit a document in Word. His factory install of Vista SP1 and Office 2007 was still only a few days unsealed and I had not seen this before.

I tried a reinstall of Office, but this didn't help at all, so don't bother.

The issue ended up being a print driver, specifically a "Dell 5100cn". After I deleted the printer, everything worked fine. To remedy the issue, I updated the driver on the Windows 2003 print server and re-added the printer on his laptop. After this everything worked normally.

After a little research, I found that other users have experienced the same issue, most related to HP drivers and that updating (if there is an update) cleared it up for them as well.

It is a tricky issue, because the incompatibility wasn't with Vista, which printed fine, but with Office 2007 itself.
