Semestermode.

Så in i helvete.

Men ni mailar. Tack.

Men ibland måste man få släppa taget.

Riktigt bra.

Max Levchin recently wrote an interesting post titled "On social ad revenues", which evaluates different approaches to social application development and the prospects for monetizing these applications. This post is essentially outlining the different approaches of Slide and RockYou, and explaining why he thinks (you guessed it) Slide's approach is superior. He basically likens RockYou's approach to that of a social ad network, and concludes that "the more your business looks like that of an ad network (augmented or not by the current sex appeal of being “social”), the less ultimately valuable it is." He positions Slide on the other end of this spectrum, implicitly stating that their focus is on depth of engagement and creating what he calls an "inner-brand" (read: "e.g. 'I go to Facebook when I want to SuperPoke people when I want to be clever,' to toot my own horn").

I won't pretend to know the answer here, but in principal I have to agree with Max about the inherent challenges that the "proprietary apps augmented by partner apps" approach presents - you have no control of engagement on partners' apps. Social app developers are in the business of creating social media programming, and leaving some of the creation of that programming to others is inherently a risky proposition. But to be fair, if companies like RockYou are discerning in their selection of who they let into their partner network and trust that these partners have and will continue to create engaging apps, in theory they can create a hybrid of proprietary and network apps that collectively have greater reach than could their own apps by themselves. The potential risk is that the "inner-brand" of your proprietary programming is undermined, but the potential reward is that your partners can create vertically focussed programming that is better for these verticals than the programming that you could create on your own - again increasing reach. With so few ad dollars being spent on this type of content today, the hybrid approach and the reach it brings does have its benefits, but what that will do to eCPMs as this industry matures is the (at least hopefully) billion dollar question... You can see where Slide and RockYou are putting their chips, and you have to love the competitive energy between these two.

Facebook said it was "seeking to end StudiVZ's illegal activity to ensure that users are not confused and that Facebook's reputation remains unharmed".

I received the following email late this week from Oozzi Networking. I had signed up wanting to find out what it was about but had not done much. Then this arrives informing me that the social networking site has been converted into a celebrity fans site.

Facebook becomes a campaign site for the Obama campaign

Scobleizer becomes an online retailer for camera and video tripods

In June of 2007, I wrote an article predicting (hoping) that Facebook would create a university rank

In June of 2007, I wrote an article predicting (hoping) that Facebook would create a university ranking system that would rival U.S. News & World Report. On Friday, I received the following e-mail from my director of strategic branding:

Dear Rob Felton:

Coinciding with the release of the 2009 edition of America's Best Colleges at the end of August, U.S. News will launch a Facebook application that will be an all-inclusive resource for information on colleges, rankings, and the school selection process for users and their friends.

Using data that has already been collected on our annual surveys, our application will allow Facebook friends to share information about the schools they are considering attending. By saving schools to their list, students will be able to compare their interests with friends, meet other applicants, and discuss their impressions of a school.

Students on Facebook will soon be perusing your institution's data -- which is why we need your help. If you have a thumbnail image of your institution's logo or another image that best
represents your institution, please send it to us to use in our Facebook application (file specifications are listed below). The data that will be included has already been collected as part of our America's Best Colleges project. We do not need any additional data from you.

Please send your image as an attachment to social-networking@usnews.com.

If you do not have an appropriate image, your institution will still be included in our application, just without an image.

Technical Specifications:

Accepted file formats: JPG, GIF, PNG

Images will be sized to fit within the following dimensions: 100 pixels wide and 75 pixels tall

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at social-networking@usnews.com or by phone at (202) 955-2242.

Sincerely,
Vachelle Manly
Data Collection Manager
U.S. News & World Report

I think this is the beginning of the end of U.S. News' reign as the ranking system for universities. As U.S. News enters the world of Facebook applications, we'll see innovative developers create new and more accurate ways of ranking schools using social networking data and the Common Data Set, which schools can upload to Facebook for multiple developers instead of just submitting it to U.S. News.

Once again. Do not post pictures on facebook that you wouldn't want blasted on the nightly news for the world to see. It's becoming more and more of a problem for young adults nowadays.

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (AP) -- Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the 20-year-old college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner. Pictures from the party showed him in a black-and-white striped shirt and an orange jumpsuit labeled "Jail Bird."

In the age of the Internet, it might not be hard to guess what happened to those pictures: Someone posted them on the social networking site Facebook. And that offered remarkable evidence for Jay Sullivan, the prosecutor handling Lipton's drunken-driving case.

Sullivan used the pictures to paint Lipton as an unrepentant partier who lived it up while his victim recovered in the hospital. A judge agreed, calling the pictures depraved when sentencing Lipton to two years in prison.

Él me emborrachó.

¿Qué voy a hacer, amiga?

Besos. Chau, amiga.

This has turned into a successful venture, hasn't it? I can tell how dedicated I am, and how easily I forget things. I haven't even been busy, just forgetful. It's summer, what could I possibly have going on? Nothing.

I don't even have anything to write about now. I just feel like I should. I'm listening to Journey, talking to friends on AIM, and trying to get the cat to stop stepping all over my keyboard. A very exciting existence.

I guess the reason I can't seem to get myself to write on this thing is because I don't really care to share my opinions about things. I always feel like I'm not informed enough to talk about the things I feel.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't think I know enough about politics to support my choice. I always find myself getting caught in conversations about who I do and do not support and I can never give a reason why, and I get eaten alive by whoever I'm talking to.

I'm pro-choice, but don't like getting in arguments about it. A baby is a huge life changer, and if a woman isn't ready for that change, or got pregnant in a situation that was against her will, she should have the right to terminate the pregnancy.

I'm a celebrity gossip whore. I visit PerezHilton.com every day.

I'm obsessed with YouTube. But, I don't think it's a good way to get "discovered." People who open YouTube accounts solely to get a recording contract or a big acting deal should probably actually try to make a living in that field first. It's a cop-out way to "make it big."

I hate MySpace but I love Facebook. I just wish they hadn't opened up Facebook to anyone other than college students.

I hate people that are considered to be "awesome" because they play the guitar. But I wish I could play. Pianos just aren't as portable.

I go to PostSecret.com every week. Reading other people's secrets makes me feel better about my own.

I guess that's enough for now. This is probably what my blog will end up being. Little list-like installments of my thoughts and opinions. I guess it could be worse...right?

One of the amazing stats of Church history is that in the year 100 AD there was approximately 25,000

One of the amazing stats of Church history is that in the year 100 AD there was approximately 25,000 Christians in the Roman world. Only a couple of centuries late in the year 310 AD there was approximately 20,000,000 Christians. This statistic is often used today by all kinds of organizations and churches as an inspiration for how the church can grow.

However there are a few crucial differences between the early church and the context that we find ourselves in today. I want to explore just one of these. That is the concept of Relational Depth and Relational Breadth.

Relational Breadth is basically the amount of people that you know. In his book The Tipping Point Malcolm Gladwell notes that if you want to spread an idea or create a movement, it is essential to have a wide group of acquaintances to whom you can share you ideas with. One of the key factors in allowing people to have relational breadth is technology and security. The early church existed in a time of great technological advance, the Roman road and system of governance made travel relatively safe and quick, the common languages of Latin and Greek made communications across ethnic groups possible. Once Rome began to wain and the Dark ages set in, the gospel not only slowed down in its movement, but it actually retreated with many former Roman subjects returning to paganism.

Today globalization and technology offers us tremendous opportunities for relational breadth. You can become facebook friends with someone you have never met in Iran and begin chatting to them online, exchanging photos and stories. Soon the biggest speaking English country in the world will be India, Chinese and Spanish are spoken across the globe in all kinds of environments. Jet travel acts like a modern day Roman road, allowing people to quickly traverse the globe.

However what the early church had that we don't have is relational depth. Being one of the great trading races, many cities in the Roman Empire had a Jewish minority, complete with Synagogues and neighbourhoods. After the destruction of the temple in 70 AD Jewish refugees poured out of Israel and into the Roman world. If you were a Jewish Christian and you wanted to share the gospel, you could pretty much point to a Mediterranean city on a map and be able to find an uncle, cousin or someone from your old neighbourhood to go and stay with.

You would be able to rock up at your third cousins house and thanks to middle eastern hospitality traditions be taken in as a long lost son, be fed, and live with your Jewish kinfolk. You had deep coventantal commitments to your relatives and fellow Jews. The kind of social commitment that is rarely seen today.

Now the thing to remember was that most city dwellers lived in Roman apartments which were extremely cramped, the rooms had little or no ventilation and were dark and dank. So most people in apartments hung out in the courtyard, you literally lived in your family and neighbours pockets. So you could not hide your behaviour. People saw how you were at your best and your worst, they saw how you treated to business partners, your spouse and your kids, if you were a spiritual fraud you would be spotted in seconds. This was relational depth, you lived in deep community with people even if you were just passing through town. Thus when Christians arrived their witness was on display for everyone to see. Their example shone out.

However today with our tremendous relational breadth, we have little relational depth. Sure you might be able become friends with someone in Iran, and talk chat online with them about your favourite album; but you have no idea what they get up to in their real life. They could sell crack cocaine from a school bus for all you know. We move jobs today often, we move homes, we even move cities, many rarely see family, we don't even know the names of the people in our street. This creates tough turf for the growth of the gospel.

In order for the gospel to grow again, we need to match the breadth of our relationship, with depth of relationships. In our facebook world where it is possible to have a thousand friends on your page, but still sit at home lonely. Part of our kingdom mandate is to go deeper with people, to again create depth of relationship, the growth of the gospel depends on it.

Developing a Facebook Platform application from your local machine (with Ruby on Rails)

You have a laptop, a sever and a facebook app.

Ideally, Facebook would talk to your development machine - but what if you don't have a static ip address and you can't use dynamic dns or port forwarding?

Reverse SSH Tunneling is what you need my friend.

The following is a step by step tutorial of what you need to do to have ports on your server forwarded to your local machine via ssh.

Step 1: Server Side

Add "GatewayPorts yes" into your sshd_config file:

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

-- add or edit the GatewayPorts variable, control-O to save, control-X to exit

Reload ssh:

sudo /etc/init.d/ssh reload

Step 2: Your Client

Run the tunnel:

ssh -nNT -g -R 3000:localhost:3000 me@myserver.com

If you want port 1 on your server to go to port 2 on your local it will look like:
ssh -nNT -g -R 1:localhost:2 you@yourserver.com so you can forward any port on your server to the standard -p 3000 that your rails server is running on.

Extra-Magic Step: Adding a bit of Rock & Roll

Add an alias to your ~/bash_profile:

alias sshtunnel="ssh -nNT -g -R 3000:0.0.0.0:3000 joseph@jorgeluisgorgeous.com"

Add your public key to the server for password free login

Thanks to Paul McKeller for getting me started on this

Wer hat’s noch nicht gelesen? Facebook verklagt StudiVZ! Diese oder eine ähnliche Überschrif

Wer hat's noch nicht gelesen? Facebook verklagt StudiVZ!

Doch was steckt dahinter?

In its complaint, Facebook accused StudiVZ of copying entire portions of the site’s design, including features such as Facebook’s distinctive “wall”, which allows users to leave messages on each other’s profile pages.

It claimed that any differences between the two sites were “nominal” and accused StudiVZ of merely “replacing Facebook’s blue colour scheme with a red one”.

Wow, life really caught up with me the past few months. I've been busy developing a personal balanced scorecard, launching Aquent's Facebook presence, visiting Southeast Asia, among other stuff. Since then, Raven-Symone finally released her album featuring Double Dutch Bus. And, College Road Trip was released on Blu Ray and DVD.

Meanwhile, I realized that Double Dutch Bus has its own Facebook! Looks like it was created by some kids in the mid-West. I think I need to do some work as a contributor to make a it a little more interesting.

Who knew my first post would be so quick.

Lipton seems to be a master of unfortunate decision making. He was recently sentenced to two years in state prison for Driving Under the Influence in Rhode Island. This occurred after the prosecutors located photographs of Lipton posted on facebook.com which showed him dressed as an inmate. These photos were taken approximately two weeks after Lipton was arrested for DUI after being involved in an accident which injured the other driver.

I don't believe we should be adjudicating morality. That leads us down a dangerous path, but lets be honest, we've been doing it for ages. When our law can be traced directly back to Mosaic (the Ten Commandments) law, it's pretty obvious that morals play some part in our judicial minds. The courts have allowed this sort of information to be submitted in the sentencing phase of a trial for a reason. If we are to have a fair and equitable system, we need to be able to examine each case and each defendant on their own merit. Clearly, most people are repentant in court, so we look to other means for discovering their true feelings. In the past, it was testimony of friends and co-workers who overheard phone calls or heard the water-cooler discussions. Now, it comes from MySpace and Facebook, sooner or later, it will be a blog, too.

No one blames the defense attorney for using every tool at his disposal to assist his client. This is not the same with the prosecution. A good deal of the time when a prosecutor uses a new or strange technique to get his point across, it is attacked by society. People have been held liable in the court of the internet for years. News stories pop up periodically where someone is fired because of something their boss saw on their web page. This case is just another of the courts finally catching up with society.

Now, let's be honest. The only reason anyone cares about Joshua Lipton (aside from the other driver, who has a marginal interest in the case, I think) is because this was a DUI. It is the most socially acceptable crime. Most people who drink, if they were honest, would have to say to themselves "Yes, I've driven when I probably shouldn't have." Well, Joshua Lipton did the same and someone else had to pay for that choice. Lets remember, Josh didn't choose to post those photographs on the internet himself, one of his friends did.

I guess Joshua just learned a hard lesson about paying for someone else's choices.

That's what a cop thinks (well, this one, anyway)

No wonder we often find ourselves lost on the road to success! Every step presents another choice, requires another decision. Each path takes us toward, or away from, our intended destiny.

Turns out that it's not just about which way to 'turn'. It's even more complicated, but not impossible. We just need a little more elevation to see the whole picture. We need the altitude (and attitude) of an astronaut, not just the compass and telescope of a surveyor.

Life is not a 'flat-surface event'. We have seen that our global existence is an inter-galactic shared experience. We got some of that perspective by looking back at our planet from outer space. While the search for extraterrestrial life goes on, the earthbound life we share on this globe also occurs in relation to others around us and an entire solar system of related influences. Those who sit in the sun too long or forget that the moon influences the tides may soon find themselves in another situation that demands their attention, or immediate action. How does all this relate to our decisions, our relationships, our politics, our countries, our survival?

Decisions have dimension.

Life is less like a game of checkers and more like a three-layered game of tic-tac-toe. A move that occurs in one dimension affects what happens in all others, as well as the ultimate outcome of the game. Unless we consider all dimensions of our shared existence, we can overlook some burning issue or rising tide of influence that can engulf us in a decision for which we are not mutually prepared. How can we navigate these dimensions, successfully, together?

Our ability to follow a 'map' will not serve us in this new 'open space'. One-to-one dialogue on any given subject will soon seem as antiquated as a string between two tin cans. Our new many-to-many online interactions will encompass perspectives in conversations between multiple participants who share from their DIFFERENT cultures - the SAME common needs. We won't be going to the 'library' - we will become a 'living library', available to each other as nano-resources deployed across a global neural network, in real time.

What can be- or could be- known is available for our ready review across the universe of the interconnected internet. What hasn't been engineered (yet) is a way for us ALL to leave the mental 'bounds of earth' and look back in a collective global perspective - so that we can -

come to consensus and interact cooperatively.

To do so will require not only the ground crew knowledge available on the internet, but also a stellar vehicle to navigate in new dimensions of local transparency and global accountability, in the new space of untethered shared governance - and shared benefits. We will have to give everyone an equitable seat at the window of insight and then move ourselves through the inter-cranial galaxies of consensus toward our mutual goal of survival.

WE will all participate as an inter-dependent ground crew that cooperatively directs US as we co-pilot OUR own flight, and as WE adjust our OWN course, as needed - while WE are ALL in route.

So, I've recently joined Facebook. And by recently, I mean like in the last three weeks. Since then, I've reconnected with friends, relatives, and former colleagues that I've all but lost touch with throughout the years. This 'networking' tool certainly does wonders. The biggest wonder of which is how much spam (junk mail) I've gotten since joining. It's actually quite irritating. I have a pittly 20Mb capacity mailbox that gets filled to the brim within a day due to all the damned spam I'm getting. Oh, I've tried circumventing it by changing the email address on my Facebook profile-- to a Yahoo! one that I don't generally check-- but the damage is already done. Thanks to Facebook, I am bombarded with ads for pharamaceutical products I will never use, money-making schemes that will never work for me, and scammers posing as respectable financial institutions trying to get at what little money I do possess. Thanks a lot, Facebook.
